03 | the climb

They weren't allowed to keep the keys, the keys that unlocked the orchestra room doors. Someone had to go to the security office every time before and after orchestra hours to borrow and return them. Since he spent so much time in the orchestra room, he knew where the security office was and how the officers there were like. It depended much on luck really; most times he would get the nice officer, who lent him the keys with a smile. It was all down to chance. But sometimes chance glitched, and there had been occasions when he met an officer who would glare at him questioningly and interrogate him with every last question in the book. And then of course there was the random guy who hovered around the place giving suggestive looks to the female workers and whistling long and low at every member of the opposite sex that walked past. 

He didn't like leaving her to chances. 

She was a studious learner, coming to orchestra one to one and a half hours earlier before practice times. On days when they had the practices he would wolf down his dinner as quick as he could before dashing down to the orchestra room. By the time she meandered down the road and turned into the block the door to the room was wide open and the lights all on, with a pair of Converses lying unlaced just outside. And there was always soft cello music thrumming away, as if drifting out of the doors in warm welcome.

She would stay late of course, so he stayed later, and ended up either yawning or sleeping through his Monday morning classes. His classmates dug their elbows into his ribs and winked, wondering aloud if he had been "busy" last night, nudging him for info on his new girlfriend. But he would brush it off, he always did; sure, he found her attractive, but that was about it, he couldn't confidently said he liked her yet. 

Which in turn begged the question - he didn't like her but was already doing so much, so what would happen if in the end he did fall?
