The Great Pyramid of Giza did not seem so great as I followed my exclusive tour group into a narrowing passageway. Claustrophobic. The ceiling angled lower the further we penetrated the sacred landmark.
"Be sure to stay clear of the excavation area to the left; it's been deemed unstable. Everyone follow me right at the intersection."
When my Giza Tour went right, I banked left, tapping on the flashlight of my phone.
The confining space of the dig ended at a small opening at my feet, a doorway, with piles of sand and broken stone blocking the entrance. I knelt, pushed away a pile of debris and entered the suffocating space. Less than a meter from the ceiling, I crawled like a centipede as sand fell in trickles. My leg brushed what I thought to be rubble but it moved with resistance until a deep click sounded. Grinding stone warned me the second before a massive block of limestone came crushing down. I pulled my legs clear just in time. A trap!
Sand blew past me and I swung my phone to see my exit—cutoff.
"Help!" I screamedfor twenty minutes until I realized nobody could hear me.
