CHAPTER SIX OF:
sonora.at first, finn didn't know where he was heading. they just needed to get out of there, away from her dad, who they feared would find them. then, midway through, finn had the idea of taking her to where he lived, her dad couldn't find them there. so he turned the car around the block, speeding down the road. millie was silent for nearly the whole way. she wrapped her arms around her knees, staring at the road in front of her.
"i'm sorry," she finally spoke, her voice a soft whisper, "a-about my dad,"
"it's okay," finn whispered back, turning to her, "it wasn't your fault,"
she sighed, being quick to change the subject, "where are we going anyway?"
"my house," he answered hesitantly, "is that okay?"
"yeah, i- i just..." she trailed off, "after what happened, i just don't feel like going home tonight,"
finn nodded, turning his attention on her, then being quick to focus on the road in front of him.
millie turned her head away from him, staring out the window instead. she stayed like that for a very long time.

"uh, here we are," finn whispered it so quietly that millie wasn't even sure she heard him correctly. he pulled up in front and stared at the apartment in shame, "sorry, it's not that big. i-"
"it's fine," millie assured, "i like apartments more than huge houses, it gives me a sense of comfort,"
finn shook his head in disbelief, but that didn't stop the smile that made its way onto his lips.
"let's go then. it's okay, my mom works night shifts so we'll be alone," he told her, taking the keys out of the ignition and opening the door to the car. she followed close behind, looking at the unfamiliar building in front of her.

"my friends, they've never even seen where i live before," he admitted to her, his voice a soft whisper. "i guess because, like, they all have good lives, good families. they're all happy, and i'm, just, me. i'm worried they'll make fun of me because i'm not as rich as they are. they probably won't talk to me again because of it, they'll be embarrassed of me."
millie looks into his eyes once more before glancing down at herself sitting on his bed. he sat next to her, occasionally fiddling with his thumbs as he spoke.
"i'm sure they'll understand," she tells him, "they're nice people, they'll understand and if they really were your friends, they wouldn't mind."
finn nods, glancing at her with curiosity. they were silent for a while, both of them thinking similar things but being too self-conscious to say them out loud. the moonlight shone down on them, illuminating his bedroom so that they could see each other in the dim, white light. millie bobby brown is in my house, he thought for the third time that minute, being quick to turn his head to her, we're finally alone.
"my friends," millie finally spoke, snapping him out of his thoughts. to his surprise, her voice was shaking, "they don't understand me. they don't understand why i always fight with my dad, you're actually one of the first people i've told about him. when my mom died, i guess that was when he kind of snapped, he got mean, started drinking. i'm scared that i'll follow in his footsteps,"
millie gulps as she feels hot tears drip down her flustered cheeks "i'm so scared, finn. i'm scared i'll turn out like him, i'm scared that i'll end up saying something and he'll hurt me. god, i don't even know why i'm telling you this, but it seems like you're the only one who truly understands me."
finn hesitantly leans toward her, wiping a stray tear away with his thumb and glancing into her oh-so-pretty brown eyes "hey now, don't cry. you won't turn out like him, you're not like him, at all. i won't ever let him hurt you."
"you're absolutely beautiful, millie bobby brown." he whispers, feeling his heart fill up with an unfamiliar feeling, a feeling that makes his whole body light up with warmth, a feeling that makes his head spin, a feeling that makes him want to kiss her, right then and there. that feeling that he felt for her, was love.
millie slowly brings her glassy eyes up, locking it with his warm brown ones. "finn," she whispers his name like the rushed prayers that she mutters when she's alone in her room. he stays silent, waiting for the punch of rejection, but instead she brings her hand to his cheek, tracing her fingers over his freckles. she brings her other hand to the back of his neck, slowly pulling him close to her. finn sees things about her that he's never seen before up close, the freckles on her nose, the fullness of her lips, the way her cheeks become a pretty shade of pink.
millie closed her eyes, no longer feeling sad, instead the same feeling that he had felt a few seconds before. he shuts his eyes right when her soft lips hit his. finn's heart began to race as millie's nose brushes the side of his face. he sneaks his arm around the middle of her back, pulling her closer and deepening the once soft kiss that they shared. her hand then leaves from his neck, brushing back his messy, black curls away from his face as she continues to kiss him hard. finn desperately needed to take a breath, but instead, he found that kissing her was even better than breathing itself.
finn could kiss her all day if he had to, and would've never gotten bored of it. he tastes her shimmery lip gloss, she tasted like the beer on her breath that she had a sip of at the party, just a few hours before. she tasted sweet, a taste he couldn't describe—whatever it was, he found himself enjoying it.
they eventually pull away shyly, finn slowly opens his eyes to see millie chuckling, her eyes gleaming with pure happiness.
still breathing hard, millie murmurs "you're pretty something, finn wolfhard." and, though he was also breathing hard, he finds himself chuckle back. his heart soaring as he processes the realization: millie bobby brown kissed him for the second time that night.
their eyes lock once more, millie could hardly contain her grin as she stares up at him in admiration. she leans forward and for a second he thinks that she's going to kiss him one more, but instead, she closes her eyes and wraps her arms around him, burying her face in his chest and breathing in his calming scent. finn pulls her close, laying his chin on top of her head and running his hands down her back, making millie, for the first time in a long, long time, feel safe. they held each other for a extended amount of time that night, sharing kisses with each other, sharing secrets all through the night.
