CHAPTER SEVEN OF:
sonora."hey, it's gonna be okay," finn hesitantly said, stopping the car in front of her house. millie stared at it for a few seconds, her expression worried as she turned back to finn. "just trust me, it's gonna be okay. if you ever need anything, just call me and only me. got it?"
she nodded, taking a deep yet shaky breath, "i'll try to call you tonight if my dad doesn't kill me." she attempted to sound joking but finn didn't see what was funny about that. they didn't speak about the kiss when they woke up together that morning, even though finn was clearly thinking about it—feeling his cheeks heat up at the thought of her lips grazing his again.
"no seriously, it's gonna be fine. i-" he was cut off by her pecking his lips quickly.
"i'll call you." she simply says, pulling away with a satisfied smile and finn feels his face grow warm.
"i'll see you tomorrow at school?" he questions, and millie nods firmly.
"definitely. see you tomorrow, finnie," millie says quietly, opening the door to the car. finn couldn't help but worry as he watched her open the door to her house and march inside. he hoped she'd be okay.

"millie," her dad's voice was tight with anger, even as she walked in she already could feel the fury in the house—the tension.
"save it," she spat, "i'm going upstairs,"
"not yet, you aren't!" he barked, crossing his arms over his chest as he scowled down at her. he took a deep breath, making millie tense up—bracing herself for the insults that were yet to come. but to her surprise, he was quiet. he stared at her for a few seconds, his eyes burning daggers into her. millie felt herself tremble, for the first time, she actually wanted him to yell at her, it was better than suspenseful, unpredictable silence.
"where the hell were you?" he asked calmly, the rage in his voice still evident.
millie gulped, unable to get the words out, her hands shaking in fear.
"answer me!" he demanded louder this time, "you were with that boy, huh? do you like him now? is that it?"
millie shook her head, trying to force back the tears that were spilling out of her eyes, "n-no, it's not like that, we're just friends! finn is my friend and nothing more,"
"finn?" he questions, uttering his name like it was a curse word, "so this mystery boy has a name now?"
millie said nothing, trying hard not to break down in front of him. he couldn't see that those words affected her, it would only make it worse.
her dad took another breath, the corners of his mouth moving up into a smirk, "you can't see him again. i won't let it,"
you can't see him again.
those words seemed to hang in the air for a few seconds, lingering like a slap in the face. millie's mouth dropped open in shock, her fists clenched in anger.
"no." she stabbed, tears falling from her eyes, "this is my life, not yours! you can't control me!"
"millie," her dad scoffed, expecting her to be done, but millie was far from being finished, she wasn't even done yet.
"is it 'cause he's a bad influence? is that it? news flash, he's not!" millie screamed, her voice shaking slightly from anger, "he makes me feel safe, something that you've never done! he makes me happy, unlike you! he actually cares about me!"
"too bad, if i even see him get near this house, you're moving schools, again!" her dad shouted, his hand slamming down hard on the coffee table, the loud sound echoing through the house, making her flinch.
that was the last straw for millie, a low groan in frustration escaped her lips as she stormed straight upstairs, cutting off her dad in mid-sentence.
"hey, don't walk away from me!" he yelled, following her upstairs, but millie was too fast, too quick, she stomped up to her room, slamming the door just as he made it up the stairs.
"open the damn door, millie!" her dad shouted, banging his fist on the wooden, light pink door to her room "we're not done here, you really think he loves you? well, guess what? he's gonna break your heart, and when that happens, don't come crying to me!"
millie forced back a sob, stumbling over to the corner of the wall. her hands pulling at her hair as tears welded up in her eyes, she let out a shriek in frustration as she slid down the wall, curling up and crying harder than before. her dad eventually grew impatient, leaving her sobbing alone in her room.
