Chapter One

Jake's POV- (Graduation.)

There was a girl, a beautiful girl, crowded around her are thousands of people, yet she is completely and utterly alone. Her older brother Callum had died in sophomore year. She had spent most of the time with her family grieving from his death, or locked up in her shoebox-like room alone with the comfort of her many books.

I had watched her for all of highschool. I knew exactly the way she tucked her long blonde hair behind her ear only to have it seconds later fall back to the same spot again, hiding her face- hiding her pain. Or how perfect her innocent eyes studied the sea of people around her, looking completely lost, but knowing exactly where she is the whole time.

I was waiting for the perfect moment to talk to her, to get this annoyingly long crush of my shoulders and to lead to something better with her. But that moment never came. For four years I had watched as she had battled through the tough times on her own, watching how people forget about her and she seemed so content to disappear. But not to me. And although she didn't know it, I saw the possibility of us.

The long clear blue robe with the nicely fitted hat on top of my dirty blond hair was a sign of me finally growing into the adult years I had waited so long for. I flicked my eyes around. Shuffling forward to get a better view of the stage just as the principal said the last words of my high school experience forever.

"Good Luck Graduates of 2015!"

I reached for my hat, sitting patiently on the top of my head, clenching the material in my hands. The first flashes of blue spread up into the sky, followed by mine, everyone was looking up, as the hats fell from the sky and cheering unleashed throughout the crowd. Some students hadn't thrown their hats into the air, as they waved the about- everyone knew those people weren't ready for the world they were about to enter, they weren't ready to let go of their high school lives. But I was more than certain to, as the hats fell on by one to the ground, I gathered mine up.

Soon people turned to their friends, smiling and laughing about their new life that had just begun. But the girl, she stood still, a smile still on her face and her heart full of hope, but no one turned their heads to talk to her, no one congratulated her or hugged her. She looked around slightly, clenching the yearbook to her chest as the blue robe surrounded her. She had been forgotten about again.

Everyone started to move, away from their chairs they had been sat on during the ceremony, she disappeared, scrambling to get out of the being surrounded by people.

I carefully made my way to the garden of to the side of the chair, where Heath, my best friend for all of high school was standing, a new girl wrapped around his waist. I planted my feet next to him as his arm came strongly around my neck. A large grin spread on his face, his eyes dancing.

"This is it, bro!" He shouted, "The dawn of the New Generation!"

My eyes caught onto her again, the girl standing alone. I crossed my arms, nodding my head slightly as Heath carried on muttering about the past years we had spent together.

"So Hayley Lyonsfield?" I roll my eyes, turning my head slightly towards him, here we go.

Heath Cush, originally known as the Cushman or the biggest player throughout high school, every class he had a new girl on his arm. From small to large girls, small to tall girls, a girl from another country, or a girl from a whole another friend group. Heath had once had this girl on his leg, clinging on for dear life and no one even knew her or where she came from. A matter of fact, she didn't even speak English and she only stayed for the sex he was giving her. You would think that he would have dated the whole female population on the whole of Earth by now. He had his player ways while I was the complete opposite. I only went out with one girl throughout high school only wishing that I could be with the girl.

But still I made the wrong choice from the girl I did pick; she had become completely obsessed with me. And although we were off right now, she doesn't seem to get the message.

Anyway back to Heath, he is around about the same height as me, dirty blonde hair and as you already know gets all the ladies. He's been my best friend for years because of all the tough times I have been through all him always being there. And although he can be a huge idiot sometimes, it pays to get along with him as you may not know, we both work together at the fanciest golf club in this small town. However, we are not cooks, or waiters, or managers. We are valets. And it's our job to keep the cars safe while the people eat their lovely meals.

"Jake." Heath groans. "Four years and you have never talked to her." He lets out a small huff of a laugh, as he unwraps his hand from the newest victim he has managed to pull in. Heath rubs his dark brown buzz cut and sighs. The girl standing next to him begins to whine at the lack of attention he is giving her and stamps her foot, running off to go find her friends.

"Well in my defense, no one did." And that is completely true, throughout high school, no one talked to her, nobody had the guts to or they were either too busy with their life to include her.

"Well there is a reason for that; she's an ice queen." He lets out one of his lopsided grins, looking back towards Hayley. "Girl can't be real."

"You don't think she's real?" I ask in disbelief, my eyes still trained on her.

"Y-you, you don't think- girl looks like that, has that much though- can't be real." He shakes his head scanning down her body, his arm still locked into position around my neck. "Okay? I know these things." He mumbles, patting my shoulder and walking away.
