The corners of my mouth turn up when the distinct sound of sleep-induced snores drift through the house. There are some birds up making their presence known. I feel like a criminal as I wrap my hands around the handle and pull. The pale light floods my figure and dimly touches the tiled floor behind my outline. The choices in the fridge are minimal. I settle on some vanilla yoghurt with some blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. I discover some oats in one of the cabinets and add that in too.
With my breakfast in hand, I quietly make my way to my room while accidently stubbing my toe on my bedroom door. Holy shit! Ouch. Owwww! I bite down on my lip to prevent a screech of pain. I bounce around on one foot until I reach my bed.
"At least it isn't bleeding." I inspect the injured toe. My eyes water as I rub the pain away.
I eat my yoghurt while picking out my outfit for the day. The strappy white camisole and inky black mini skirt work well with today's hot forecast. Once again my flip flops are my go to shoes. I make sure I have more than enough sunblock in my bag. I have money that Gail gave me, a dark taupe sweater and lip ice. My cell is fully charged and I am ready to go. I stuff a towel in just in case.
Now to tell them where I've gone. My eyes scan my room and find a pencil. The closest thing I can find to write on is a paper serviette. I shrug. It will have to do. I write them a short note telling them where I've gone and that there is no need to worry and to call if anything goes awry.
I slip out the back door to take the scenic route to the waterfront. I notice someone watching from the upper balcony of Clara and them's house. A guy. It doesn't take me long to realise he is have a smoke.
He waves. It must be Julian. I can't imagine Theo smokes nor that Brandt would recognize me well enough to wave. I pass by dragging my feet through the wet sand. It is low tide. I even pick up a shell or two.
"Happy birthday!" Margot engulfs me in a bear hug when we meet up at the arcade. "Welcome to the sixteen club."
Marnie doesn't hug me but does hand me a bright yellow balloon.
"So everyone is aware that you're a birthday girl." She says in a relaxed tone.
"Let's go buy some tokens." Margot wiggles her eyebrows.
We spend the day on go carts, jumping into a ball pit and attempting to play all sorts of games. The highlight of the day being when Marnie hits a jackpot. The machine spew a thousand tickets. We look crazy as Margot and I praise the goddess of tickets. As Marnie gathers her tickets she begin singing a very theatrical version of Money, Money, Money.
We trade in our tickets for three giant teddy bears.
"I am going to name him Beebo." I rub over its soft material.
"We are going to look so out of place in West Wind." Marnie tells us.
"Where?" Margot moves her bear onto her hip.
Marnie beams, "I booked us a table at a resturant for lunch."
"Awwww." I let out. "I'm so touched that you remembered my fondness for food." I wipe away a fake tear.
"Yeah, yeah." Marnie rolls her emerald green eyes.
Marnie is like one of those tough guys who pretends to be heartless, but is actually really romantic and sweet.
West Wind is one of those rustic places with a scatter-brained-surfer -shack feel to it. The people aren't too upper class, though from the grimaces and glances it is clearly not 'kiddy friendly'. Margot is completely unaware. Marnie shrugs it off. We sit outside in the afternoon sun.
