richie was afraid of losing eddie.
if there was such thing as a worst time to start going out with him, it was now. i mean, would you want your near-defenceless boyfriend to be face to face with a child eating clown?
richie had gone through his fair share of losses, but he wasn't that much of an emotional person. until, of course, it came to his boyfriend. eddie meant more than the world to him, and he would fucking murder anyone who dared to even threaten him.
he wouldn't, though. that's kinda messed up.
he blamed himself for the bad things that happened to eddie, the things that made him so... fragile. the two of them were best friends, even before they started dating in secrecy. mrs kaspbrak wasn't the biggest fan of richie. (he wasn't a fan of himself either, he really couldn't blame her.) sometimes he felt bad about asking him to go and join bill and stan riding their bikes down tall hills that he was scared of falling from. sometimes he felt bad about pushing him into the quarry when he almost drowned. but he always felt bad about getting his favourite person involved in the mess that was rapidly becoming his own life. he was sick of himself and just wanted something to be mad at or someone else he could blame instead of himself all the time.
richie had a loud mouth. it got him into trouble a lot. his snarky comments gained lots of attention from other people. he had stopped being able to tell whether it was a good thing or a bad thing. but where he lacked in compassion for most people, he made up for it with one special person - and he was glad to know that eddie felt the same way. he knew this as a fact, because every time eddie tried to say that he hated him, a stupid grin spread over his face and his cheeks would turn red before he would stumble over to his boyfriend and wrap his arms around his waist. they'd end up holding each other, richie playing with his hair and eddie rubbing patterns on the other's back.
they could never hate each other. they could never hate it. but they both hated the fear of losing each other more than anything else in the world.

richie was on eddie's roof. he had no clue why he even climbed onto it in the first place, but he was comfortable up there. for such a strange place, it was oddly calming. he always rode his bike to eddie's house if ever felt a bit isolated, or if he started beating himself up over something to do with the dumb clown terrorising derry. he was scared, but it was safe at his house. his legs dangled over the side of the roof for a moment before he carefully dropped onto the ledge beside eddie's bedroom window and knocked. soon enough, richie was crawling through the window and flopping onto his boyfriend's bed.
"why are you here?" eddie asked, sitting down next to him.
"i missed you." he replied, smiling.
"is that it?" eddie shuffled so he was lying on his side and facing richie. "feels like more than just that."
"yeah, sorry for lying, eds. i only came for your mom." the boy grinned, but eddie just sighed.
"anyone would think you're going out with my mom instead of me." it sounded serious, but his giggle at the end of the sentence assured richie that he didn't offend him with his joke. all it took was a little sign for him to know when to stop.
