...and the one time he did.

-

richie tozier was your average sixteen year old. he had a group of friends he loved, made some pretty bad jokes and enjoyed spending time playing arcade games. yeah, perfectly normal- if you discard the fact that he constantly found himself almost kissing his best friend.

the first time was during one of their sleepovers, which had begun to occur on a regular basis. richie tozier wasn't a huge fan of sleeping, but he wasn't a huge fan of sleeping on the floor either. those two combined meant that he shared a bed with eddie whenever he stayed the night and he rarely got much sleep. on a rare occasion he'd drift off at around four o'clock in the morning, but most nights he just lay there. sometimes flat on his back with his hand brushing against eddie's. sometimes hugging him. sometimes above the covers, or upside down, or maybe he'd just go for a walk down the street. he didn't really care.

his head was buzzing was thoughts. he didn't know why he was sad that eddie insisted on taking the floor that night. richie had pressed him about it, but something seemed off. the time on his clock read 2:45 when he slipped on a pair of vans and sat on the edge of the window. he was tempted to push himself off and go for a walk, but he just wanted to stop and think for a while.

he didn't know why he wanted to share a bed with eddie until he realised that maybe he liked him in a more than friend way.

"dammit!" he murmured to himself, putting his head into his hands. he already knew he wasn't straight, but having a crush on his best friend wouldn't go down well.

"r-rich?"

richie turned around to see eddie standing up behind him in the pale moonlight, rubbing his eyes. "why aren't you in bed?" he whispered, walking over to him.

"i, i don't know." he shrugged his shoulders, looking at the floor beneath him. "thinking, i guess."

"about what?"

"...boys."

this caused eddie to smile. "oh yeah?" richie nodded, the corners of his mouth turning up. there was no point in lying. they flirted jokingly a lot. it would be no different to that. eddie would think it was just a joke.

"yeah." he looked up to meet his eyes. "and how the nicest ones won't share the bed with me." he added in an almost funny tone. almost.

eddie furrowed his eyebrows. "huh? you... what?"

"why'd you take the floor tonight, eds?"

eddie sighed, grabbing richie's right hand and tugging him off the windowsill. "i thought maybe you'd like the space. was i wrong?"

"yeah. yeah, you were." he grinned, pulling the cover of his bed back. "get in."

he closed his eyes and felt a shift in the mattress beside him. he rolled over and was met with a pair of dark eyes just an inch or two away from his.

"better?" eddie smiled, lifting his chin up.

"better. goodnight, eds."

he giggled at the nickname. "goodnight, trashmouth."

his eyelids fluttered shut and richie studied the way his facial features aligned perfectly, subconsciously moving his face forwards a bit to kiss eddie's forehead. all of a sudden he stopped himself, eyes widening.

that was when richie realised he was about to kiss eddie.

-

the second time was at the quarry with the rest of the losers. it was one of richie's least favourite memories. stan had pushed richie for making a dumb joke about his mother and he ended up stumbling over eddie, who was standing in front of him. the two boys had ended up falling, eddie's back crashing to the ground and richie landing above him.
