What if Sasuke only went after Orochimaru because of a jutsu the Snake placed on him? When Naruto battles him, he manages to break the jutsu because of his revealings. The Uchiha came to his senses when he delivered the final blow.
Sasuke returns...
Due to many requests, as well as complaints, I have decided to add another chapter before Naruto meets Gaara. As well as the fact that this is an long overdue promise to both SmartBadPrincess and black_wing_angel.

"Oi, I thought we were going to Suna," Kankuro frowned. Why were they in the Academy?
"One last stop before we go to Suna," Naruto rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. "The midgets wanted to taste Ichiraku's, and I wanted to see someone else before we go. Do you think you could take them, Temari?"
The sandy-blonde haired woman shrugged before nodding. "Don't take too long," she called over her shoulder before running after the kids who had dashed off at the mention of Ichiraku's.
Kankuro groaned as he was dragged along and sent a pleading look at Naruto, who laughed.
"Need some help entering in style?" a voice whispered from behind him.
Naruto whipped around, ready to attack if need be, only to find himself face to face with Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno.
He breathed a sigh of relief. "Sakura, Sasuke," he acknowledged with a nod.
The pinkette started tearing up before she threw herself at him in a hug, and only then did Naruto remember that she wasn't in the Hokage office earlier that day.

"Hey Sakura-chan," he whispered softly.
"You idiot," Sakura mumbled.
"I take it Sasuke explained things to you, if you're not bombarding me with questions," Naruto joked lightly as Sakura pulled back, smiling as she wiped away her tears.
"So, you needed help greeting Iruka-sensei?" Sakura said as a spark of mischief entered her eyes.
"I never took you to be one for the prankster, Sakura-chan," Naruto joked as he lightly punched her shoulder.
Sakura laughed. "You've rubbed off on me more than I'd like to admit."
"So here's what we're going to do," Sasuke interrupted.
Once he was done explaining, Naruto grinned at him. "So I've rubbed off on you more than you'd like to admit as well, right?"
Sasuke gave him the infamous Uchiha grunt, but he was smiling.
"Let's get into positions, then!" Naruto grinned, punching his fist in to his palm enthusiastically.
