Sensing him there, David whips around and points the gun at Caleb. Caleb gives me a discreet head tilt, small and barely noticeable. He's giving me an opportunity, and I have to take it.
I hear David shout "What are you doing here!" and I sprint to the table that holds the device. I know the security code; it is ingrained in my brain. With trembling hands I quickly begin to type in the code. I hear a gunshot echo in the small room, and then an agonizing pain rips through my left side, right below my rib cage. I crumple to the ground and my head strikes the hard concrete. I feel something thick and warm slowly running down my neck.
I look up to see David pointing the gun at me, his hands shaking. I stare him straight in the, so
"Do it."
Out of nowhere, Caleb's fist, battered and bruised, flies around and connects with David's temple. The gun goes flying and clatters to the ground about a foot away. David falls from his wheelchair. He's out cold before he hits the ground.
I cry out in pain in a failed attempt to get up. I have to finish the code. I have to finish it.
"Tris!" Caleb rushes to my side and begins to try and stop the bleeding. His eyes dart back and forth from my head to my side, trying to decide which to staunch first. Finally deciding, he presses his hands down on my side. I inhale sharply, the pain excruciating.
"Stop. Caleb Stop." His eyebrows knit together, a confused expression crossing his face. "Just finish the code."
Caleb's eyes search my own for a few seconds before he gets up, jogs over to the table and types in the rest of the code. I lay my head back on the cold cement, trying to focus on breathing as my vision blurs around the edges. I hear a beep signaling the code was entered, but I also hear something else. Footsteps. Someone is running towards us.
I lift my head slowly and turn it to the side. David is lying on his side, a welt already forming on his head. In an instant he is awake. Within seconds, he reaches out, extending his arm and grabs the gun, his eyes flashing towards the door, as the footsteps get closer. He turns back towards my brother. It only takes a half a second for my brain to register what I see, however it's not fast enough.
"Caleb, watch out!" I shout, the intensity of my voice sending me reeling. Caleb turns his head, his eyes widening in shock. I hear the first gunshot, so loud it sends a shooting pain through my head. My hands fly up to my temple, pushing, trying to block out the pain. Within seconds, a second gunshot rings through the room, and by that time all I see is darkness.
