*2 years later*

I hate him. Why is he such a prick?! Cato Tandrov; the most arrogant, selfish, spoilt brat I have ever met. Just the thought of him makes me scream and hurl my knife at the practice dummy in front of me. I can't believe I used to call him my "best friend"! I vaguely remember him telling me he'd always be there for me but obviously he's forgotten about that..... I can't imagine him caring about anyone apart from himself anyway. I watch as he hangs about with some other guys, swinging a sword around as if he owns the place. He is sloppy with his swordsmanship though, I don't know what the trainers see in him to be honest...

I am still busy throwing my knives when I hear a voice shouting at me. "Clove!" it says "training's over, you can leave now." I look over to see my trainer Joel looking at me, slightly annoyed. I look round and realise the training is completely empty. "Sorry." I mumble, hoping to avoid a lecture. Instead he says something bizarre. "Show me a couple more throws" he asks. I oblige and pick up five knives. I throw them at the target dummies one after the other and they all find their target. I smirk and turn to face him. "You're working really well Clove." he comments, "How old are you?" "Fifteen" I reply. "Hmm, I'm thinking of putting you in for the exam early." he tells me "You show a lot of promise." I can't do anything except stand there and stare at him in shock.

As you know it is compulsory to start training for the games at twelve, however the trainers don't want to waste their time with weaklings so when you turn sixteen you do a test called 'the exam'. If you pass the test you are pulled from school and you get private training sessions at the centre. If you fail it's bad. you are thrown onto the streets with nothing, no money and a disgrace to your district for being incapable of bringing pride by winning the Hunger Games. Occasionally more advanced students are asked to take the test early so that they can begin heavy training as soon as possible. I never dreamed that I would get chosen early! I grin at Joel and reply with what I hope is a fierce voice "I've been ready for the exam my entire life." Then I grab my stuff and head home.
