AU: a job went wrong.

They had told him that his hearing would get sharper. And wasn't that what everybody always assumed? Your other senses will replace it. Fuck they did. No way to replace what he had lost.

It took him almost two minutes to be sure that it was Jim. He used a fake posh accent and drawled the vocals even more than usual but when the door opened Sebastian was 97% sure that it was him who had signed the doctors papers. And he was more than willing to believe it. That somebody was coming to get him.

So tired. Tired enough, he hadn't slept well here, they usually gave him a sedative so he calmed down during the night. Tired and helpless and pissed enough to ignore his pride and simply reach out, wordlessly, flail until he heard quick steps and his hand found expensive wool. The first time he had made Jim quicken his steps and the irony of it all almost made him laugh out loud.

"Hello, tiger." Fake accent gone and he could hear it in his voice, every syllable was soaked with it. Sympathy.

They had taken the bandages off this morning. God knew what Jim was looking at.

What is a blind sniper? It sounded like a lame joke.

"Hey, boss. Coming to take me home, are you?"

Jim was on the phone. Sebastian could hear his voice change by the minute. It was weird to rely on voices, the tone and which words were stressed. He'd have to practice. Give yourself time. He didn't want to practice. He wanted to see Jim's eyes light up with anger. Just one more time, please. I wasn't ready for this.

"Sorry. Business." It was hard to tell from where Jim was coming but according to his sense of direction Sebastian was sitting with his back to the kitchen. "I hope it's not cold. Might have put too much salt in it too." Just the tone of Jim's words made Sebastian want to scream.

Awkwardness, most of all. He wished Jim would talk, tell him about the call, joke about the business, insult him for the shirt he was wearing. I don't even know which shirt I'm wearing.

Finding and picking up his cutlery, finding the plate, using his sense for warmth and the smell of the food. The knife felt good and familiar in his hand and the moment he realised that Jim had wordlessly cut his meat into pieces for him he wanted to throw the plate against the wall. Feeling Jim's eyes on him. Not that he would ever check again if they really were.

"What is a blind sniper?"

"Sebastian. Don't."

"No, come on."

Papers were put down abruptly, annoyance. A deep breath, bracing himself. Soft shuffling, Jim was straightening his suit. "...We talked about this, tiger."

"No, you talked. I just listened. Come on."

Getting up too quickly, Sebastian had to reach out and grab the back of his chair. So weak. He knew where Jim's voice was coming from and if he relied on his memory his desk was only a few steps away from where Sebastian had been sitting.

"I'm not gonna fight with you, tiger. Stop trying." This voice. Too calm, way too fucking calm. Deep breaths through his nose and he could tell which aftershave Jim had used this morning but he would never know if he was wearing the blue tie that Sebastian had always liked so much.

"Why should I? Why should I try and be nice? Because of this? Niceness won't make it go away, Jim!"

Silence. Sebastian could hear Jim breath slowly, the chair being pushed back, the soft click of the laptop being closed. He didn't want softness. He wanted Jim to rage and yell, he wanted things like they had been. When his cheek was touched he flinched and pushed Jim's hand away. "Don't fucking touch me!"
