Aran-Thor closed his eyes, and breathed deeply. The Jedi Master; Kyle Katarn, stood opposite him in the training grounds. Even though his eyes remained shut, the Padawan quivered in the over-bearing presence that Master Katarn's force imbued him with. Without a single world, Master Katarn ignited his lightsaber and dashed towards Aran. Despite himself, he gave into his fear, and broke his naturally calm stance. Though; as he thought to himself, he couldn't imagine even the most talented Padawans being able to remain calm if a Jedi Master such as Master Katarn was rushing towards them. Aran panicked, and instinctively leaped into the air, over Master Katarn, landing a direct kick into the nape of his neck. This caused the Master to fall onto the floor unexpectedly, much to his annoyance. Quickly, Katarn hopped to his feet, to meet Aran-Thor's emerald green lightsaber with his own, electric blue blade.
"You lack technique, Aran." said Master Katarn, as they met blow-to-blow with their lightsabers. Katarn was a veteran user of six lightsaber forms, his knowledge demonstrated clearly in the way he used his blade. The Seventh form of lightsaber combat; Vapod, happened to be the one form that Aran-Thor had become most acquainted with, at such a young age. The style of Vapod channels both light and dark sides of the force, making it an extremely effective counter to the other six forms. Master Katarn lifted his saber above his head, and swung diagonally at Aran's side. Aran moved, and positioned himself accordingly to deflect the swing; but as he did, he let out a yelp, as a burning pain singed into his leg, and his saber met nothing but air.
"A feint swing?!" Aran said to himself, in his head. Katarn stood, and straightened out his robes, as he extinguished his blade.
"Had we not have altered the concentration of our Kaiber Crystals' to make it appropriate for training purposes, your leg would have been completely dismembered." scolded Master Katarn; disapprovingly, as he turned and walked away. "You are gravely mistaken if you believe our enemies will show you the kindness to alter their own Kaiber Crystals just because you are a Padawan." he continued. Aran-Thor extinguished his own lightsaber, and holstered it back onto his belt.
"Master, it was just a simple mistake-"
"A simple mistake, that could have cost you your life!" barked the Master, as he turned his head to look at the Padawan. "And a disappointing mistake, at that. You are different to any Padawan this Academy has ever seen; and I will not deny that, but if you have any hope of one day becoming a Jedi Master, I certainly hope you improve your awareness." he finished; with a sigh, walking out of the Training Grounds. Aran sat himself down on the cold, steel ledge of the Training Ring, frustrated. He was deeply annoyed, and more so disappointed in himself. This was his chance to prove himself to Master Katarn, to solidify a potential future seat on the Council; and instead, was practically made a fool of, and defeated in what only felt like mere seconds.
His depressing moping, started to feel much more potent within him. His sadness and frustration turned to anger; and instead of moping, begun seething. Suddenly, Aran-Thor paused, and stood up, sensing another familiar presence nearby, but one much bigger than that of Master Katarn's. The feeling of stone cold metal pressed against his exposed shoulder.
"Are you okay, Padawan?" spoke the voice, warmly. Aran recognised the voice practically instantly, and turned. There; infront of him, stood the founder of the Jedi Academy himself, Master Luke Skywalker. Aran-Thor instantaneously and instinctively bowed his head respectfully, and smiled. This was the first time they had ever directly spoken to one another.
"Yes, Master Skywalker." said Aran, trying to not sound nervous in front of him. The Master gave a warm smile to the Padawan.
"Aran-Thor, wasn't it?" Skywalker asked, taking a seat beside where Aran had previously sat, inviting him to do the same. Aran obliged, and sat beside the Master, eagerly. "Master Katarn has spoken much about you. " Skywalker claimed, staring outwards through the immensely large window. Aran-Thor's smile twisted into a sort of frown, as he bowed his head slightly.
"I can imagine." he replied; solemnly, and with a bitter tone. Luke frowned, and turned to look directly at the Padawan.
"He has spoke greatly of you." Master Skywalker iterated. Aran turned his head also, looking straight at the Jedi Master, and laughed, sarcastically.
"Greatly?" Aran-Thor scoffed. "Not likely. All I've done since he took me on as his Padawan, is constantly disappoint him. He's even said so himself. Our first proper fight today, must've only lasted two or three minutes, at most." Luke Skywalker's face turned, plastered with bewilderment.
"And you're disappointed with that?" asked Luke, with what seemed to be genuine shock. Aran turned away again, and nodded reluctantly.
"That; in itself, is a feat that many, MANY Sith Assassins and Inquisitors have not attained." the Master explained. "Many Sith that have made the mistake of challenging Master Katarn barely lasted a minute. Seconds, even." he continued, before standing. A loud static noise emitted from the speaker on the walls around the Training Ring, announcing:
"Master Skywalker. You are needed in the Meditation Chamber immediately."
Luke sighed comically.
"It would seem I am needed elsewhere. It has been a pleasure, Aran. May the Force be with you." Master Skywalker said, as he flipped up the hood on his robe.
"And, to you." replied Aran-Thor, bowing his head.
