"Athena!" my dad shouted "Get down here now! We need to leave."

I quickly straightened the last piece of hair and frantically looked around my room for any forgotten items. Throughout my life, I've realized that some things don't change. One, I will always fight with my long, thick hair. Two, I will always hate being the new girl. Three, my father will never except the fact that I'm majoring in Fine Arts.

Due to my lack luster high school grades, I was forced to work my ass off in community college for a year before transferring to University of Nevada Las Vegas. Having lived in the same town for all my life, finally leaving is like a breath of fresh air.

"Athena Grace!" snapped my dad.

I yanked myself out of my daydream and finally decided I didn't leave anything. I pulled my last bag down the stairs as I thought about how much I'd been preparing myself for the last two weeks.

It was August 11th, a week before class started, and my father was driving me out to Las Vegas. We'd always lived in a smaller town called Lund in Nevada, and after staying here for a year past high school, my dad had hoped I would change my mind. However, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and I'm stubborn just like him.

My father glared at me as I walked into the kitchen and walked outside to the car without a word. I put my bag in the trunk and climbed into the passenger seat to begin our two and a half hour drive.

We settled into a somewhat comfortable silence on our way to the school. I didn't mind, I was used to it. My father never was a man of many words, and I guess I inherited that from him; just like I got my long wavy dark brown hair and olive colored skin. The only traits I inherited from my mother was her hour-glass figure, long legs and her tendency to speak before she thought.

He nudged me awake and I realized the car had stopped. I looked out the window and almost gasped in shock. The last time I saw the University was when I went for a visit in my junior year of high school. It seemed much bigger and more intimidating as I stared at it. I took a deep breath and stepped out of the car to help with my bags. I opened my purse and pulled out the information packet I got in the mail last month. I was in room 27A and I followed a map to find my building.

I opened the door for my dad and quickly followed him. He stopped in front of room 27A and I pulled my key from my purse. We walked in to see a moderate sized room, a little bigger than mine at home, with two identical double sized beds and a small dresser on each side. Half of the room was already decorated with a bedspread and some band posters on the wall. My dad put my bags down and silently surveyed the room.

"It's nice," he said. "But I have to get to work."

"Okay," I replied. "Thanks for the ride."

"Don't disappoint me," he stated as he kissed my forehead and left the room. My dad had never been a fan of affection.

I sighed and sat on my bed when I saw the door opening again. I thought my dad forgot something until I saw a girl walk into the room. She was tall, fit, with long ombre-styled hair and huge exotic brown eyes.

Great. My roommate is prettier than I am.

She turned to me with a started look until she saw my bags and realized who I was.

"Oh! You're already here," she said, walking towards me.

"Um yea, I'm Athena. Nice to meet you," I said.

"I'm Vanessa, welcome to UNLV!" She says as she gives me a hug. I instantly feel my fear melting away.

"I can't believe I'm here!" I gush, "It's still so surreal."

"Well don't worry about a thing," she said, taking my arm. "Stick with me and I'll show you around. Including some of the sickest parties and all the sexiest guys."

For some reason, my heart dropped as she winked at me and pulled me out of the room.
