I was part of a happy family for 14 years until one night changed it all. My big sister’s name was Rachel and I always felt like she was watching after me. She was reminding me from a lot of our father with her strongly build body. She had our mother’s beautiful raven hair and same eyes as I do.

When we were little mom told me and Rachel many times a certain story. It was a story of love that changes all and gives strength. At the same time it was a sad story. It was a story of how my parents met and what happened to them. The story of a vampire and a werewolf.

Let me share you that story. It all started when my mother met my father in a small city in Scandinavia. My mother was a exchange student that explored the city when she had free time from her studies. One day she went to library and saw a man running outside from the library. Their shoulder collided and one of the books that the boy was carrying fell to ground. However the boy didn’t notice it.

My mother picked the book up and run after him. Her eyes were nailed to that boys brown hair. He was running so fast that my mother couldn’t keep up. Fortunately for her the boy missed the bus he was trying to catch. He was checking the bus timetables when my mother finally was able to face him.

Next part of the story always made me and Rachel giggle. My mother told me that when the boy turned around he had amazingly golden brown eyes and smiled charmingly. The sad thing was that my mother didn’t understand what he said to her at the first moment they were speaking. Father never told her the meaning of his words. My mother didn’t speak the language that my father does. My mother was from United States and she didn’t understand the language people spoke in that part of Scandinavia.

Our mother offered the book for that boy. As a return he wanted to offer her coffee. That is how my parents met. My mother was once a human and my father has always been a werewolf that has many generations before him. They both loved camping and staying outdoors enjoying the wild. My father decided to move to my mother’s home country after her. They were in love and engaged.

That was the love story part that they told us. The rest of the story came when me and my sister were older. The story was about the reason why my mother wasn’t a human anymore. My father never told her the fact that he was a werewolf since being a werewolf normally doesn’t cause troubles. Well, my mother got pregnant and was expecting Rachel.

My mother was in the middle of her pregnancy when they were having a night out to celebrate their relationship. They went to movies and had dinner. The pregnancy made my mum feel ill sometimes and she went outside from the restaurant to get fresh air when father paid the bill. My mother, Susan, heard sobbing from an alley that a girl was making. She went to check it out by herself since my father didn’t come outside yet. My father, Edvard had trouble when paying the bill since the card verifier was mail functioning. When he finally was able to go outside he heard the worst thing that a future husband and father could hear.

He ran to the alley where my mother went. There was a young looking blonde girl who had grasped my mother from behind. She had red eyes glooming from hunger and her sharp nails were piercing to my mother’s neck. Girls hair was turning red from my mother’s blood that was dripping from the holes in her neck. The holes that the girl made by piercing my mother’s neck with her set of fangs. My parents told me that she was one of the banished vampires since she didn’t care about if exposing herself or what she does to humans.

Next part of the story was something that my mother always used to describe us. She saw my father, Edvard, at the entry of the alley. The alley was dark since the lamp posts light didn’t reach the end corner where the girl held her. She tried to ask help from her Edvard but her throat made only a deep moan. She had tried to free herself for quite some time. At first she saw Edvard looking surprised and then his hands went to fists and he seemed angry. Never had my mother saw my father so furious when he yelled the girl to let her go. The girl refused and my mother’s eyes went shut while tears run on her cheek. This was her end. It was her and their baby’s end, to be dried out from blood by someone.

A howl made my mother open her eyes and then she heard quick footsteps reminding her from a dog’s running. Suddely she was free and now holding her neck to stop the bleeding. She saw a beautiful white furry animal which reminded her from a.. wolf? It ribbed the girl to pieces and then turned to face my mother who back up against the wall. She didn’t see Edvard anywhere and was afraid that the wolf had attacked at him first. Killing her baby’s father. The baby.. She hold her stomach and was relieved that the baby was still moving.

The wolf was staring at her eyes. It was bigger wolf than you see in Zoo’s, it walked towards her slowly lifting one huge paw in front of another. It sat in front of her and stared at her in eyes. Then she saw a shade of golden brown in its eyes, the same one that Edvard has. “Edvard?” My mother asked with confusion.

The wolf made a pleased howl and licked my mother’s face while she closed her eyes. After my mother, Susan,  opened her eyes she noticed that there was Edvard kissing her. Edvard was kneeling in front of her and holding her head with two hands. His clothes were bloody. When they stopped kissing Susan asked for what has happened.

After making sure that my mother and the baby were alright, Edvard told her everything. About him being a werewolf which she took really well considering the situation. He told her that werewolves and vampires live at peace normally but that vampire was banished. Normally any vampire wouldn’t attack on humans at the street, especially to anyone who is pregnant. Many vampires prefer animal blood or just get blood from blood banks. This vampire was feeling too much graving for live humans blood so that is how it happened.

Next day my mother felt ill. Soon they found out that she was turning. She was so afraid for her unborn baby that didn’t worry about herself. Week later she had eyes of color red and fangs. She was craving for blood. My father felt guilty because he wasn’t there in time to save her but my mother always gave him comfort and told him that she isn’t blaming him.

Few months later a baby was born. She was their daughter, my big sister Rachel. The odd part was that during the day she had golden brown eyes and at night they were red. They noticed some other weird parts when she was growing. She could eat food but also wanted to taste my mother’s food. Blood.

They slowly became to realize that my sister was unique. It happened when she was one year old. She made herself turn into a grey wolf at will. She was like the cutest wolf puppy is the way my mother described it. My sister was partly a werewolf and a vampire. Well, mostly she was werewolf since she was supposed to be one when her father was a werewolf. However somehow during the pregnancy she was infected with vampire qualities.

This discovery made my parents worried. It was forbidden, forbidden to vampires to love werewolves and the other way around. Those groups lived in peace these days but they were worried what would happen to them if the bloodlines mix. Now it has happened.

Things changed and they were on the run. Running from the organization, that keeps stuff like this under surveillance. The organization would kill their daughter if they know. My parents they would perhaps let be in peace since they knew each other before a banished vampire made her turn.

Short after they were on the run my mother discovered that she was expecting again. This time it was me. Unlike my sisters I have half of the powers of a werewolf and half vampire powers. My sister was stronger since she has more werewolf blood but I was faster since I had vampire’s ability to run fast more in me.

For years we moved to location to another until we finally found a place in the middle of a forest. We never had contact with other children or any of my parent’s family since it was too dangerous, too dangerous to us to be found out. Our parent’s loved us even though we were freaks of nature.

After we lived in peace for two years and build a log cabin as our home, my life changed. The organization found our hide out. They destroyed it, they destroyed my family. I was the only one left and I still blame myself for not helping them, for being too scared to move a muscle. If I only had done something, maybe I wouldn’t be this alone?

The water slowly drips from caves ceiling and drops to puddles that are covering the caves flooring. Here I was hiding, in a cave. I have already lost count that how many caves or abandoned cabins or homes I have used. Staying hidden is one key rule to survive and not making contact with anyone.

Slowly I embrace myself and bury my head on my knees. I’m feeling it again. The hunger.
