Chapter 7

"Isn't there any other relatives we can stay with, maybe one we know?" Kent asked.

"I'm sorry but your Aunt and Uncle are the only ones that responded to my phone call and I believe the only other relatives that are known or alive is your grandmother, but I can't possibly leave you with her" replied the officer.

"What why?" Kent questioned.

"Because of the fact that she is in a nursing home."

"WHAT WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN?"

"Mr. Warner I think you should calm down, all questions will be answered within time." Kent took in a quick breath while closing his eyes before exhaling slowly and opening them to look at me with a sad smile. He turned back to the cop unbelievable calmer and repeated the question.

"When did she get put into a nursing home?"

"I believe it was sometime ago your father placed her there but I'm not sure."

"Ok well, do you now what our aunt's like because I atleast want to go there knowing something about her?" Kent asked hope in his eyes that she would be a complete change of scenery.

"I don't know the specifics and I'd hate to cut this short but I must be on my way, I'll be back in a few days to take you to her and I will answer your questions in the car. How does that sound?"

Kent looked at me and then back at the cop before nodding his head and sitting back down in his seat. The cop quickly left after that and the room remained silent as my eye lids drooped with sleep, which I knowingly accepted.

*~*~*~*~*

I must have woke up some time later that afternoon because when I did the sun was still out. I turned around seeing I was alone in the room and I started panicking thinking Kent had left. I don't know why that scared me so much but I needed him by my side, whether it was just for support or comfort. As my heart rate went up and the monitors began to get louder a nurse soon came rushing into my room and over to my side - seeing my panic.

"Oh, dear, everything alright ok? It's ok I'm hear you can calm down sweetheart." She said, soothingly petting my head.

"Wh-where is my brother?" I asked trying to slow down my heart rate.

"He's just getting something to eat, he'll be back any minute dear. Would you like for me to stay with you until he arrives?" she asked already starting to sit in the seat beside my bed. I just nodded before calming down completely.

It wasn't long before Kent walked into the room seeing my lying figure and the nurse talking soothing to me and stroking my head. He walked straight up to me and knelt down to be on eye level.

"What's going on? Are you ok Brooky?" he started stoking my cheek while looking at me. I nodded my head again before talking

"Yeah, I just got scared when I woke up and you were gone." Tears started to escape my eyes at that point and I tried wiping them away.

"Awe Brooky, I'm sorry I just went to get something to eat. If I knew you'd be scared I would have stayed-"

"No, no it's ok I know you need to eat. I just freaked out over nothing I'm sorry." Kent nodded and got up and quickly pulling me into a tight hug, I wrapped my arms around his waist as silent tears fell down my face. It wasn't long before there was a knock on the door and I looked up still not pulling my arms away from my protective comfort. But I was surprised to see Stephanie and Kaden enter.

"Hey Brooky" Stephanie said awkwardly while walking towards me with Kaden right behind her.

"He-hey Steph, Kaden, what are you guys doing here?" I asked genuinely confused.

"We heard you were in th hospital and came to see how you were, so how are you doing?" Stephanie pulled me out of Kent's arms and sat beside me puling me back into hers.

"I'm ok I guess."

"That's good, so what happened. We know you went to the hospital because you were beat up or something but how did that happen, they didn't tell us all the information?" It was an easy question but I couldn't think of the proper words that were to come out, as I started stuttering over them Kent stepped in helping me out.

"Our dad's abusive and he finally got caught." He said holding his head high while mine hung low. Both Kaden and Steph just stood there shocked not knowing what to say before Kaden spoke.

"So you're dad did all this to you, he put you in the hospital?" I nodded while my head remained down and off of anyone's probing eyes. I felt Steph pull me back into a hug.

"Why didn't you tell me about all this, I could have helped you guys. You know I'd always be there for you Brooky." Again I nodded not finding the voice to speak. I raised my head clearing me head before trying to get out the words.

"I was scared." Steph just looked at me not knowing how it felt but understanding was showing in her eyes

"Ok well your ok now right? No more dad?"

"Yeah the bastards behind bars." Kent blurted out before I could utter a word.

I looked over at him knowing he was only acting like this out of anger towards our dad and to show the strength on his part, because I knew the real Kent wouldn't have said that. I smiled a little at him and his hard face softened immensely as a smile formed on his face as well.

"Well then that's good I suppose! But - where are you going to live now that your dad's gone?" I looked back over to Steph and Kaden seeing him nodding his head to her question, as if he had been wanting to ask the same thing.

"Were going to be living with our Aunt Jody and our Uncle Pete, apparently Jody is our dad's sister."

"Apparently? How didn't you know that?" Kaden asked

"Yeah, we didn't know we had an aunt until the cop came in and told us and apparently this was the first time of them hearing about us. It should make for an interesting and awkward arrival eh?" Kent said trying to laugh it off. Steph looked back at me.

"What your leaving to go to a strangers place?!? No, you can stay at my place Brooky and so can Kent I don't want you there."

"Steph, I'd love to stay with you but if I was allowed to stay with you they would have called your parents but they didn't the only called my family. Clearly anyone who aren't relatives are out of the question for living arrangements." I said knowing that family was only called because of the fact I would be living there for the remainder of my teenage life, until I was 19 at least.

"This sucks" Steph said with a pout on her lips, I had to laugh because it looked so funny. Soon after Kent and Kaden joined in and before long we were all laughing over nothing but yet it was a comfortable happy moment.

Soon after visiting hours were over, Steph and Kaden were asked to leave while Kent was allowed to stay after I begged for him to stay. I moved over on my bed for Kent to lay down with me, just like when we were little kids and were scared at night. I fell asleep that night comfortable for the first time in a long while.
