One week until Halloween
"Jackpot!" Jay cried as he opened the box he'd just been sent. The shout prompted Carlos to slide his headphones down and pause his game of Assassin's Creed.
"That the shipment from the Isle?" Carlos asked.
"Yep. Looks like Diego pulled through" Jay answered as he emptied the contents of the box, all of which were bottles of assorted types of alcohol.
"How did you even get these in here?"
"Told them it was for a Chem experiment. They should NOT have put Sleepy on mail inspection, because lemme tell you, getting this in was impossibly easy."Carlos laughed, and went back to killing Templars until Mal and Evie ran into the room, both in a state of panic.
"Woah, easy!" Jay said as he pulled the liquor box from their path.
"Thanks, Jay" Mal didn't hesitate to pull a bottle of vodka from the box and uncap it.
"Those are for..." Jay's voice trailed off as he gave up.
"What's the rush?" Carlos asked.
"You guys need to see this" Mal told them. In her arm was the Wesley journal. The one Morgan had left with Ben, who'd given it to Mal out of sheer confusion. As Evie poured and distributed four glasses of vodka, Jay locked the door to ensure that nobody would come in. Mal flipped through the pages until she got to the right one, them chugged the glass Evie had given her.
"This look familiar to any of you?" Mal asked. Under her finger was the sketch of Demina.
"Uh... no, not really" Carlos confessed. "Why, she look familiar to you guys?"
"She lives on the Isle" Evie explained. "Demina Dracul, her shack is within sight of Curl Up & Dye. But according to this, she's-"
"Some sort of monster" Jay read off of the page. "Big whoop. Isle's full of freaks, even by our standards. Remember that Chernabog cult?"
Evie, Mal, and Carlos all shuddered at the memory of that cult.
"Yeah, no need to remind us" Evie answered. "But this is different. She is different. And if this book is to be believed, then we better pray that nobody on the Isle falls for her little trick.""That book is over 200 years old" Carlos reminded them. "If she's still alive, which is a big if, odds are she's given up by now. Where did you even find this book, anyway?"
"Ben's desk" Mal explained. "Said Morgan went by earlier, telling him to reverse his Second Chance act."
"And I'm guessing Demina here was the big reason why?" Jay asked. Mal nodded.
"But of course, he's stuck" Mal seethed. "Ben's not listening to me, or Morgan, or anybody else who's telling him that this Act is a bad idea, because-"
"M, deep breaths, don't wind yourself up" Evie took Mal's hands and made her stay still, long enough to calm herself down. "Ben's just stubborn, like his dad. That's not something you can control, okay?"
"Alright" Mal nodded.
"Do you think this Demina girl is actually on the Isle?" Carlos asked.
"I've seen her myself" Evie told him. "Then do you really think anybody's going to fall victim to her curse?" he asked. "If nobody's fallen for it in 200+ years, then nobody's gonna fall for it now. Once the Isle gets stuck in a pattern, that pattern stays."
"Well, then" Jay said as he stood up, scooping up the bottle. 'This was stupid."While Jay flopped on his futon and chugged his vodka, Mal left to give Ben back the Wesley journal. Evie sat next to Carlos, who went back to his game.
"When's your big date with Jane?" she asked.
"Tuesday" Carlos answered. "We're going to see a movie."
"Ooh, do you know what movie?"
"Not yet. Jane wants to try Leatherface, that slasher movie, but I'm pushing for Kingsman, because I know she doesn't have a stomach for horror."
"And neither do you."
"No, I really don't."
"Still, Carlos. Make the girl happy."
"I'm gonna run out of the theater screaming if we go see Leatherface. You remember when we decided to watch Annabelle at, like, 1 in the morning."
"You know the advantage of watching a horror movie with a girl who hates horror movies?"
"What?" he asked.
"Well" she began. "When there's a really scary scene, and she freaks out, she's going to curl up, lean in, and hold you tight. And that's when you put your arm around her, to make her feel safe."
"She makes a point" Jay interjected from the couch.
"Butt out, Jay" Evie and Carlos told him in chorus. Jay just laughed.
"Ten bucks says he wakes up at noon" Evie whispered.
"Ten bucks says he misses his classes with a hangover" Carlos countered.
"Deal" she agreed.
"Awesome. Now get out of here, before you have to deal with drunk Jay again."
Evie laughed, and left the room.
