I winced at the scrape on my knee, it wasn't a deep cut, it wasn't a hard fall either but someone had once said, and quite rightly; the smallest was always the fiercest.
"Are you okay?" he asked noticing me in pain,
"Good as gold..." I mumbled, "Just a cut, thanks though..."
We got to the end of the lane, near a small, white batch. "It's er.. Here."
"Oh okay, you alright to go up on your own, from what I've heard it'll probably be wiser if I don't meet your folks..."
I blushed, "Yeah sorry, thanks for everything if only I do something to say thanks?"
He brushed it away, "nah, don't sweat it... its fine." He held up a hand, "Here wait up..." he got out a pen from his satchel and wrote something on it, pressing on his knee. He took up the paper in his fingers and handed it to me. "My number... I mean you don't have to text me at all; it's just if something else happens you've got someone to y'know... "
I stopped him and smiled, "Thank you," and I turned, "I'll see you round?"
He smiled, "Yeah sure." And he left, jogging back down the street.
I stopped a minute, watching him as he turned the corner and then advanced up the broken wooden steps towards the house, noting raised voices inside;
"Well, I've tried ringing her phone and I'm getting nothing... I've called the principle and he said he hadn't seen her since assembly that morning, I called her teacher too and she said she was present last lesson so I'm under the impression something would have happened on the way ho... LIZ!"
I crept in timidly through the door and was encased in a hug from Kathie, "Baby, I was so worried..." she gripped my face in her shaky hands, "Where were you? Why are so late home?"
I decided not to tell them about the incident with the boys, I didn't want to scare them... "I um, I... I fell asleep... on the beach... missed the bus home, I'm sorry I got a little lost and couldn't..." I started sobbing half out of exhaustion and another out of situation. Will came forward, "It's okay honey, it's easy to do in a new place... we were just scared something had happened to you that's all." They exchanged glances.
I looked up at them, "Everything's fine, seriously I just got lost..." I subconsciously brushed my knee and winced as it stung on impact. "Could I clean my knee up please?"
"Sure..." Will said, half-heartedly and helped me hobble to the kitchen where I propped myself up on the sink. He went to the other side of the kitchen and grabbed a wad of kitchen roll and some Savlon. Kathie came in and grabbed a towel off the Arger, "Right, now you're home I'm going to take a shower... Liz there's some left over lasagne in the fridge help yourself to that honey and go and have an early night... after the shock you've had I think you deserve one. You two okay then?"
I nodded, "Thanks Kathie."
She smiled, "Love you both..." and she left closing the door.
Will rinsed the wad under the tap and pressed it so the water would seep out and wasn't too waterlogged. "I can tell y'know..." he pressed the cloth to my knee and I winced as the cold wad of kitchen roll stung my knee.
"What?" I asked trying sound surprised as he wiped the congealed blood from my knee.
"Can tell when you're lying to me... I've known you far too long Liz. Now tell me what happened and where you really were..." I sighed and watched as my diluted blood was drained into the sink.
"Fine..." I mumbled through gritted teeth due to the pain. "I was at the beach and I promise you Will I did fall asleep but on the way home I came across a gang of boys... I knew them, vaguely I mean I had seen them at school a couple of times; they're in the upper year. Anyways they chased me down to the Warf. And then it kinda happened again."
He paused and stopped the tap. "What, one of your visions?!"
"Yeah," I sighed, "except this time it was different... This time it was more like a dream... I wasn't all there.."
He looked up at me with hard, green eyes, "explain..."
"I closed my eyes and the world around was different, I was on a beach and there was a woman and a random seagull and..." I held my head in my hand.
"Was it still amber, like before?"
"No, everything was normal, well not normal.. Just.." I sighed deeply once again, "the woman said it was my consciousness or something like that, and kept calling me Calypso..."
Will turned and sat on the table, looking into space.
"Then it has begun."***************************
