I got up off the rock, slipping my feet back into my red jandals which had got warmer over the course of the hour, the sea breeze brushed my cheek and I moved my hair to the side of my face to let the rays warm my back. I had been sunbathing on the rock for over an hour and a half now, I couldn't face home after the school day; I needed some time to myself, time alone. I grabbed my loose, white shirt off of the rock and put it on, enveloping my top half in more warmth. I had been swimming earlier, picking my togs up from home and changing into my bikini before my parents got back from work, and so my hair was still ever so slightly wet at the ends; I rung the remaining droplets out and picked up my towel, heading back to the shore.
I removed my tortoise shell ray bands from my head and placed them over my eyes, my vision going a tinged brown shade. The beach was fairly empty; a few couples and groups of children lay playing or sleeping on the soft, warm sand, not usual for Summer; although the weather was usually nice annually usually the beaches were consistently packed this time of year.
I stepped out of my shoes and picked them up walking alone the shoreline; letting the cool water flow between my toes. I sighed deeply and lifted my head, towards the white blaze above me, soaking in its heat like the water to the shore.I continued walking, rubbing the loose sand off my feet; feeling the warm sand beneath me. I neared the footpath and followed it to the car park and bus stop, ignoring the burning tarmac. Checking my Billabong watch I felt it stupid to walk home now, it was almost seven o'clock and the sun would set quickly; I had just moved here and although I could find my way around by daylight I felt uneasy about travelling when it got dark. I sat down in the shaded bus stop and crossed my legs looking at my painted, red toenails. It then dawned on me, I had left my phone back at the Bach after coming home, it was still in my skort pocket.
"Damn." I mumbled to myself, imagining what my foster parents would be thinking right now and what they would say when I got home; whatever it would be, it wouldn't be good.
I started to worry. I was four hours late and they would probably have got back around four so they would be frantic by now. I got up and walked over to the small tuck shop at the edge of the car park, the sun was going down now and shadows lay by the nearby lampposts.
I entered the shop and addressed the assistant
"Hiya, do you have a phone I could borrow please?"
He sighed, "Aw yeah no, sorry love; we've no connection here."
The door opened behind me and a group came in.
"It's okay.." I replied, now rather panicked "I'll um, I'll manage.. Thanks"
He smiled and I turned to leave the shop, one of the boys mockingly stood in my way of the door; laughing.
"Sorry." I said and pushed past him, the group laughed and I left the shop, walking back to the bus stop.I sat down on the still warm seat and felt a shiver run down my spine. It had gotten cold and all I was wearing was a tight bikini and an over top to keep me insulated. I huddled into my top to keep myself warm. The group of boys exited the shop, they were laughing loudly and I was under the suspicion that they were marginally drunk. They walked by, and I froze, praying they wouldn't see me.
Unfortunately they did.
"Hey Sweet cheeks!"
My heart stood still as I knew they were talking to me.
The group advanced towards the shelter forming a loose semi circle around me.
"What's a girl like you doing out so late?"
"I'm er." I spluttered, getting up on my uneasy legs.
One of them stopped me with his hand, "Don't be scared, you can come with us..."
They all laughed in approval and came in closer, "yeah, we'll look after you" one of the said, touching my back.
I decided that I needed to get out, there and then; so I tried to run but one of them grabbed me by my arm.
"GET OFF ME!" I screamed and they laughed, sending ripples of fear up my body.
I twisted my arm and shook the boy loose, I turned and ran.
"COME BACK HERE!" One of them yelled, I turned down the street running up the lit avenue and towards a block of houses. I could hear their pounding footsteps behind me and I ran down another street, and down a flight of stairs towards the town centre and a warf. That was when I realised I had made a very big mistake. There was no bridge over the warf.
I stood there, frozen unable to regain my breath, and could hear them yelling as they advanced closer. I looked at my options;
I could jump in the river, but I didn't know how deep or fast flowing it was
Or I could face them, which was my only choice.
That was when my head started buzzing.*************************************************
