"COME BACK HERE!" One of them yelled, I turned down the street running up the lit avenue and towards a block of houses. I could hear their pounding footsteps behind me and I ran down another street, and down a flight of stairs towards the town centre and a warf. That was when I realised I had made a very big mistake. There was no bridge over the warf.
I stood there, frozen unable to regain my breath, and could hear them yelling as they advanced closer. I looked at my options;
I could jump in the river, but I didn't know how deep or fast flowing it was
Or I could face them, which was my only choice.
That was when my head started buzzing.I clutched my head and bent double trying to gain stance, I swayed nevertheless; I felt dizzy and stammered backwards my eyes opening to reveal a amber-tinged world. I could see them coming, sprinting towards me; their mouths moving but no words entailing. I couldn't move; I was in no position to. my heart hammered against my chest and I knew as they drew closer what was in store would not be good. They were feet away and I started screaming, but briefly stopped as I realised no sound would leave my throat; I closed my eyes and felt strength leave me; I stood there weak and feeble, like a possum in the headlights.
Seconds past, I waited for the moment to strike; but nothing came. I stood on the warf trembling in anticipation and felt warm tears drip from my face and onto my bare, cold neck. I parted my lips and my breath thickened, my tear-filled eyes opened and the boys were gone.
I stood on a beach. A sandy beach, one of which I had never encountered before. All colour had returned to its normal shade, which was a great relief. The beach was empty. There was no wind here, the shore met softly with the sand making a soft whisper, that was all I could hear. I stood and looked around, confused. Was this heaven? Had I died? The question rang out in my thoughts; I then concluded that I couldn't have died, I had felt no pain.
I stood on the beach and watched the loose, beach grass tumble in the... Wind... But there was no wind, I had felt no wind on my bare back or touching my face like a kiss. I advanced forward, towards the lonely strands of grass, the tumble weeds played about in the sand; but there was still no wind. I heard a shrill sound from above, I looked up and my eyes were bleached with the blinding glare of the sun. A single seagull flew above me, swooping low towards the shore. I put my hand in front of my face whilst my eyes recovered. The sea gull landed on the shore line, it's little feet imprinting on the wet sand.
I advanced towards the seagull, moving faster and into a jog; the seagull didn't waver, it only looked up in dismay. Seagulls didn't do this, average seagulls would simply fly away.
I stopped running and gazed at the little, helpless creature on the sand."Calypso..."
I turned, fear pounding in my heart. A woman stood, in a white linen dress with long blonde hair and aqua marine eyes. She smiled, a soft curve forming on her lips; her laugh as smooth as the pebbles that lay by my feet.
I could not speak; words trapped, once again, in my throat.
"Calypso," she said once more "do not be frightened my darling child."
"Who are you?" I managed, tears stinging once again in my eyes.
She chuckled lightly, "Why you do not need to know that, yet at least.."
"Then where am I?" My voice was shaky.
"This is your mind Calypso, all that you see here is a figment of your consciousness..."
I briefly looked up at the blue sky, dotted with clouds and the soft, beige sand; warming my toes, the seagull once again advanced into the sky circling the two of us.
"I don't understand.. Why.." I shook my head, "Calypso, why do you call me that?"
"It is your name my child, your true name. A name you will come to discover over time, a name you will come to choose."
The little seagull landed by the woman and sat at her feet, unlike a seagull at all; more like a little dog.
"This is Jacob..." She gestured to the seagull "He is your protector..." I looked down at the little bird, it's black eyes seeming lifeless and dead.
"Erm.. Okay..." I continued to look at the seagull. It's little eyes met mine and I thought flashed into my vision, "Wake up..."
I looked at it.. "What?!"
"Wake up... Wake up!"
The world buzzed and went orange. My eyes flicked open and I was back on the warf, except this time I was on the ground.
A figure shook me, "Wake up!"
I struggled backwards away from the boy, gasping for breath.
"It's okay.." He said softly, "they're gone now I, I frightened them off..."
The boy wore a bone kouroi around his neck and a kind but apprehensive smile, he wore no top but only black Ripcurl shorts with sand caking his feet. I knew him from somewhere.
"I'm Conner..." He said, offering his hand out.
I took it smiling, "Liz..."
"You were in a lot of trouble there, good job I got you outta that aye?"
"Yeah.. Thank you."
"Don't mention it..." He smiled, it dawned on me who he was.
My face slackened and I stepped back a bit, noting his tousled, blonde hair.
This was the boy from my nightmare.*********************
