What if someone told you they could bring the love of your life back from the dead...

We had been driving for hours now and our trip was soon coming to an end. I sat in the passenger seat of my car with my knees pulled up to my chest staring out of the window.
The sky was an ominous dark gray color that threatened rain. Foggy mist rolled from the groups of trees that sat on either side of the highway and there were no other cars near us. It reminded me of something out of a horror movie and we'd be the first to die.

I could feel my nerves building up, the vibration of the car causing my body to shake uncontrollably. I had no idea if I was actually scared or just freaking cold.

As if hed noticed, without looking over, he turned up the heat and put his hand on mine.

"Chill out. You're okay."

I didn't understand it but, that instantly calmed my entire body. It was like a wave of warmth had entered through his hand working its way through me.

"Thanks."

"Yeah." he moved his hand back to the steering wheel quickly still not bothering to look at me. "We'll be there in like 10 minutes."

I nodded. "Oh, do you think it'll rain?"

"Looks like it. Put on something warm."

I was more than relieved when the car finally stopped. He had parked us at a small gas station and had gone inside to give me time to change. By the time he got back, I had on a black sweater and jeans with some comfy boots.

"Good." he smiled as he got back in the car leaving his door open. "So I got an umbrella for you and food."

"Ah, thanks. You didn't get any for yourself tho?"

"Why would I? I'm not even human "

"Right." I opened my bag of chips" I keep forgetting that."

"Well stop forgetting." he smiled. "Hurry up so we can get this over with. I don't mind seeing the oracle," he chuckled "but I hate this gloomy ass town."

After a few minutes, I was done. I grabbed a jacket and followed him out past the station. From where we stood, the town appeared like a ghost town. There were two or three people in sight that I assumed were homeless, tweakers, or both. The odd thing was, although there was no one there, I could hear cries of numerous people in the distance.

"Is there another town near here?"

He just smiled, continuing to walk ahead of me.

"Come on!" I followed hesitantly. "Please tell me where we're going."

He stopped abruptly.

"Jade, I'm gonna need you to trust me for a bit okay? I would never deliberately hurt you okay?"

Seeing the look in his eyes become so intense made me believe him without hesitation. "Okay"

"Good." he grabbed my hand pulling me across the street.

"But that doesn't mean I don't wanna know where we're going," I mumbled.

He just smiled.

We walked for about ten minutes through cuts between large buildings to end up in an alley closed by larger brick buildings. I stared around wondering where all the sound had gone. A moment ago, it had been loud like crowds were near us and now it was silent.

"Here we go."

I tightened my grip on Embers hand feeling my nerves start to build up again.

"What's going on."

"We are gonna enter one of the realms of the dead."

I stiffened. "But-but I thought we didn't need to...I thought."

"Calm down. It's not Los Muertos. It's Point Niyal."

I inhaled sharply. "Ok."

He walked us to the end of the alley, letting go of my hand and moving them to touch the wall to the right of us. I backed away as I felt the air around us change. The current direction of the wind switched entirely along with the frosty temperature. Suddenly, everything was hot. It was as if summer had arrived early. I stared in amazement, however, almost as instantly as it had happened, it was gone. The air around us was cold again but, this time we weren't in the same location.

I stared wide-eyed at the new city that stood in front of us. The sky rumbled above us crowded with dark gray clouds that moved in swirling motions above us. There weren't many trees but the ones that I did notice were small lacking a proper amount of leaves but, it made sense since the air was so fridged. Crowds of what I assumed to be people walked around us having conversations as people in my world would completely unbothered by our sudden presence. I could hear music playing beyond where we stood that sounded like a some form of jazz. What amazed me the most though, were the buildings within the city. Skyscrapers larger than anything I'd ever seen touched the sky, the tops disappearing into the smokey colored clouds. All of the structures were darkly colored. It was beautiful.

"Keep up with me." Ember began to walk ahead quickly, somehow avoiding bumping into the numerous crowds of people.

"Hold up." I jogged up behind him, grabbing on to his sweater to stay close. "So this oracle? Where is she?"

"You see that building over there?" he pointed up to one of the scrapers that just grazed the sky.

"Yeah."

"That's where she lives. Top floor."

"Well that's pretty close."

"Mhmm. It'd is closer if you walk faster." he sighed.

"I'm sorry but, I gotta admire this. It's amazing."

"Trust me you'll have plenty of time to admire a city of the dead once we're in Los Muertos."

I turned away staring at the ground. Even the mention of Los Muertos made my heart jump. The thought of seeing Mason again made me flutter in the inside. "Okay. We can walk faster."

In 20 minutes or less, we stood in the lobby of the large building. The inside was a lot more welcoming than the out. The bright red carpets combined with the white walls and black leather sofas made me feel right at home.

Ember stood at the receptionist desk taking with a beautiful girl whose skin was as white as snow itself.

"So what someone of the living doing in a place like this?"

I turned around startled, coming face to face with a man who faces was distorted. His skin, a dark red, like dried blood, his mouth made up of black teeth, no lips to cover them whatsoever. I could feel the strangest sensation erupting inside of me. This man was dangerous. I didn't want to look at him and had no idea how to even answer his question but, the thing that made it hard wasn't his tone or the feeling he gave me. It was the fact that he had no eyes...

"Jade!" Embers protective tone caught my attention causing me to stand, apologizing to the man that I had to go.

"This is no place for the living!"

The malice in his voice sent chills down my spine.
