Discoveries in the Moonlight

As the three of them gathered a pile of mysterious looking books, going up and down the aisles, they kept wondering, pondering what the town was hiding from them all this time. Possibly even their family members. What did they do, why do they have these sinister books? Were they all in on this together?

They sat together around a square table after dusting it off, and bringing three chairs, they got to work. Thea also pulled out her laptop in case they would need it.

Ronnie opened his first book, and they looked at him expectedly. “... Am I seriously supposed to read it out loud?”

“Yes!” Cassandra said in disbelief. Then under her breath she said, “Numbskull…”

Ronnie sighed and started reading. “Okay, so this is how it starts off…”

He read the title first. It was Mayan blood-letting. The three of them supposed that it would be normal to have in the history or research section, but these books weren’t scattered, they were pretty close together.

Bloodletting. To “give back to the Gods.” The Mayans cut deep lines into their arms, legs, and other soft places in their skin to honor their gods, and they asked for advice from the higher beings. They used sharp piece of obsidian or shark teeth to cut their skin. You collect the blood, once it starts oozing, on paper, and then you burn it, which symbolizes the offering of it via the transformation of the smoke rising to the heavens. To begin this ritual they honored their god of their choosing. Usually this occurs in a temple, or a pyramid. People gather around and watch. The rituals usually occur because kings or queens come to throne, marriages happen, deaths, births, or wars are at hand. Or, when someone is just trying to communicate, or as said earlier, try to get advice from a God; advice to balance the world.

Ronnie read through all of that and set it down, cleared his throat and pushed it away at last. “Well… That’s basically the gist of it.” He looked up at them. Thea and Cassandra’s eyes were open wide.

Cassandra was the first to reply. “Ewww, that’s gross…” She nearly gagged.

Thea laughed. “Unless you’re a vampire… Bleh.” Then Ronnie made fangs with his fingers and Thea cracked up.

Cassandra glared at them and threw the book at Ronnie’s chest.

“Oww! Woman! What the hell?!” He shouted at her.

“We need to concentrate! Do you want to get caught?” She leaned forward, her eyes showing disbelief.

That shut Ronnie up, and Thea had her hand to her chin, with her elbow on the table, perplexed in thought.  His feet were shifting underneath the table, and his eyes wouldn’t leave the greenish-blue carpet.

“Uhm guys… I think I have an idea,” Thea said after about ten minutes of silence.

          “What?” Cass tilted her head.

Ronnie thought they should keep reading but said nothing, interested in what she had to say, urging her to go on with just one word. “Hmm?”

She looked them in their eyes with a childish grin on her face. “I think we should break into the librarian’s offices… Search around and see if we find anything interesting to lead us any further into this mystery. I mean, we don’t know if we don’t try right? We might as well.”
