Chapter 1

It’s funny how at night, when I’m lying in the dark with no source of light, I would give anything for a little sunshine, but now that I’ve been standing in the blazing heat for at least five hours, I would give anything for some shade. I don’t usually run the coffee stand, but when my usual drawing stand is closed, the others usually stick me with some odd job that no one else wants. It amazed me that they decided that this town wasn’t the “right clientele” for an art shop, but that they would surely make more money selling hot espresso in this 90 degree heat.

I’ve been travelling with this circus since I was born. I was the somewhat-shunned daughter of the lion tamer and the wood sculpture carver. I’ve never known anything other than being a carnie, but this life suits me. Maybe it’s because I’ve never slept in the same place for more than a week, but I can’t imagine living in the same town for an extended period of time. I would surely go insane.

Speaking of going insane, maybe I shouldn’t have sold that last cup of coffee to that old lady. She was wearing a heavy sweater and her face was all red, and she appeared to not even know where she was. But she was gone now, lost in the crowd. She was the third person to purchase from my stand today.

God, this place sucks. Couldn’t wait to leave tonight. Good thing it was one of those small regional fairs that only lasted a few days. I was never good at dealing with heat, and the fact that the entire fair was set up on a giant slab of cement wasn’t helping. With heat coming at me from all sides, combined with the fact that I had nothing to eat but coffee all day, it was a wonder that I was still standing. I leaned against the cart, starting to get dizzy.

                “Um… hello?”

I jumped. Someone was standing in front of me. I had no idea how long he had been there. It was a teenage boy, about my age. It took a second to register what he was there for.

“Oh, er, sorry. Do you want some coffee?”

He blinked. “You seem kind of out of it.”

“Uh…” I shook my head. “Sorry. We have plain coffee for one dollar, or one-fifty with cream and sugar.” I recited.

He shrugged. “Actually, I’m good. I just came over here because you looked like you were having heat stroke.”

“Oh. Um, thanks, but I’m ok. I just haven’t eaten anything yet today-“

“You wanna get something to eat?”

                ”…Huh?”

“Well, no offense, but I don’t think you’re gonna make a lot of cash off of hot drinks in this weather. No one would notice if I took you out to lunch, would they?”

                I paused. ”No…”

“Ok, cool! I know this great Chinese place a few blocks from here. Let’s check it out.”
