In the earlier years of Renesmee's life, Edward watches his daughter sleep from time to time in order to read her thoughts and dreams. Sometimes, he closes his eyes and pretends that he can dream alongside her as well.

There is one secret that Bella sought to never let Edward know as she managed to control her shield enough to let him read her from time to time.
Bella had never once envied her daughter for still being able to dream and she fakes a smile everytime her husband brings up a subject...because she knows that if she can still dream, the nightmarish scene of when Edward left her that fateful day will be the only vision to welcome her. The truth is...that nightmare continued to haunt her sleep until she became a vampire. Thank God she was a mental shield and managed to hide it well.
