Eddie was sat in his first grade class.  They were cross legged on the carpet while the teacher read them a story.  She always read them stories of princesses, kingdoms, life lessons, but this one was different.  She explained to the class about soulmates.  This was a new topic for the kids, only one or two having any prior knowledge on it.  "When your soulmate is injured, you will see a completely same scar on yourself."  All the kids watched, staring in wonder.  They all looked at each other, pointing out the similar scratches and bruises they each had.  Eddie watched the other kids attempt to match them up, hoping they'd find their soulmate.  "Mrs. Douglas?" Eddie asked, politely raising his hand.  She walked over to him and crouched down, "Yes, my dear?" "Why is my soulmate always in pain?"  He lifted his shirt to reveal what seemed to be a belt mark.  Mrs. Douglas gasped, pulling Eddie out of class.

Eddie went back on forth on the swing set.  He looked at his two best friends, who were both holding hands.  It was 4th grade.  Eddie, Bill, and Stan had all met that year.  Eddie watched them carefully, completely jealous they had already found each other.  "You gotta stop falling, Bill.  My mom thinks im clumsy."  The two boys giggled, comparing the scratch marks on their knees.  "W-well you n-n-need to s-stop running into th-th-things."  Eddie swung silently, skillfully putting a hand over his neck to hide the bruise.  "Do you guys think my soulmate exists?" Eddie asked hesitantly.  The happy couple stopped and looked at him.  Bill came over and wrapped an arm around Eddie, "D-don't worry y-you'll f-f-find them."

It was seventh grade now, still no sign of his soulmate.  Eddie made sure to not get hurt, for he didn't want his soulmate to have any more scars than needed.  He looked around the school, half of it already paired off with their partners.  He looked down to his arms.  He followed the slashes up and down, the big ones, the small ones.  It started as just a few weak ones, but they grew slowly bigger, more.  He pulled his sweater sleeves over his hands, not wanting to show off what wasn't his.  He winced and looked down, another one.

Eddie was walking home with Bill, Stan, and Ben.  Bill grabbed Eddie's arm, "I k-know you're l-l-like super bummed about n-not knowing y-your s-s-soulmate, b-but it's a n-new year, f-fuckhead."  Eddie laughed, "You're just lucky you met yours practically right out of the womb, sicko."  The group bursted out laughing.  Eighth grade was a lot more fun.  The group walked down the street, practically skipping.  Eddie sighed as he felt the tingling sensation in his head.  Another one.  He tried to ignore it, but it kept getting worse.  The group trudged on, Eddie walking slower behind.  "Eddie, you alright? Ben asked.  Eddie looked up, bruises starting to form all around his face.  The gang quickly ran over, inspecting Eddie's face.  "Who would do that?" Stan asked, looking around scared.

They all whipped their heads around when they heard a scream.  They all made eye contact, mutually agreeing to see what was up.  They sprinted down the street, towards the source of the tragedy.  They all froze at the end of the alleyway.  Henry bowers on his goons were beating up the new kid, Richie.  None of the gang had really known him.  They all debated on if it was worth helping, but they all knew it most definitely was.  Henry punched Richie again, causing Eddie to wince and grab the side of his own head.  The group ran in to help, except Ben and Eddie.  Ben looked at Eddie, then to Richie, Then back to Eddie.  "Are you guys like...?" Ben asked.  Eddie looked up, still holding his head, "I don't even fucking know him."  The two eventually ran in to help.

They all walked home together now, Stan and Bill laughing at each other's identical bruises.  Richie walked quietly, not wanting to interrupt the already set group.  "Who even are you?"  Eddie asked, walking in the back with Richie.  Richie straightened his glasses and looked around, trying to see if Eddie was talking to someone else.  "Your mom would know."  Eddie glared at him, "Okay, fuckface, just tell me your name."  Richie smirked, "Richie."  Eddie nodded, "Eddie."

They walked in silence for a few minutes, until Eddie decided to break it.  "Do you see Stan and Bill?  They're soulmates."  Richie smiled then replied.  "It's nice."  "Do you have a soulmate?" Eddie asked.  "I'm not really sure, I've never seen any scars on myself that weren't caused by me."  Richie answered truthfully.  Eddie laughed, "I bet my soulmate feels the same way, I never get hurt!  Everyone makes fun of me for being too careful and shit."  Both the boys stopped for a second.  Eddie scratched his arm, remembering what was on it.

"Weird question, can I see your hand?"  Richie shrugged and held it out.  Eddie put them side by side, the long scar completely identical.

It was senior year now.  Eddie watched his best friends walk down, graduation caps in hand.  He smiled at them.  Bill, Stan, Ben, Mike, and Bev.  They all walked out together, arms linked.  Eddie ran off, "Richie!" He called, running into the taller boys arms.  Richie smiled, then pet the hair of the boy in his arms.  "I'm surprised you made it, Eds."  "Stop calling me that." Eddie said, half muffled in Richie's chest.  They grabbed and hands and began to walk off together.  Eddie never gained a new scar again.
