Chapter One: Stopping Time

Eradanus sat on her window sill, looking at the bright rising sun and vividly colorful morning sky. She squeezed her dark brown eyes shut, but the image of the sun was imprinted on her inner eyelid. she sighed. "First day of school. Its gonna be okay. You'll make it. Your new. No one will know how much of a freak you are. Yet." She got up, walked to her bulky yet much loved silver dresser, and grabbed her clothes. "checkerboard skinnies. Check. black camisole. got it. sheer black stripe shirt. Okay." she ran into the bathroom, brushed her teeth vigorously, washed her face, applied her make-up, then touched up her hair with a flat iron. She checked the time. six fifty-five. perfect. "Mom, im going to the bakery for breakfast. Then im heading to school. Love you." yelled Eradanus. She waited for a reply, but, as usual for almost every morning, didn't get one. She grabbed her backpack, opened the door, stepped into the crisp autumn morning, and started her trek to school.

She discovered the bakery when she was boredly romping through the town, in search of cool, and perhaps, some form of friendship. Lots of people like her went to this bakery. Poets, musicians, writers, artist. It was the perfect place to meet people she could actually make friends with. But she soon discovered that she was the only teenager that found the bakery a nice hangout. She longed to hang out with someone her own age, someone like her. But she felt that would never happen. She breathed the deep sweetly scented air. She was close. She closed her eyes, picturing the cupcakes and rich chocolate brownies and pies. And the strong, luxurious, coffee. All of a sudden, she was jostled out of her daydream. A skinny boy on a skateboard had crashed into her. Her backpack fell, and out of her pockets spilled her money for the day."sh*t." he muttered. He bent down and in seconds managed to wrangle up all her money. Eradanus picked up her backpack. "I'm sorry." He handed her the change. She looked straight into his eyes. They were stunning. Pale silver blue. Then something strange happened. She was stuck, looking into those alluring blue eyes, she was trying to look away. It was like she was frozen. She couldn't move. Then she noticed it. Nothing else was moving. Only he was. He winked. Time came back. "Its oka.." She was going to say it was okay, but he was on his skateboard, riding away.

After her encounter with him, Eradanus was both terrified and struck with curiosity. What had he done? How did he make everything seem to stop? "Maybe i dreamed the whole time stopping thing up" she thought. She was to vexed to eat anything. She stopped in the bakery, and got a hot coffee. It was too loud. She needed to think. She looked at the clock. seven fifteen. School started in 35 minutes. She then decided to just walk to school, slowly so she could think. As she drew nearer, she heard riotous laughter. She smiled. She could almost picture her old friends and her, exploding as a preppy girl burst into tears over a ripped skirt. Those were the good old days. She checked her watch. She had somehow managed to waste thirty minutes walking. She'd walk to her first period class. She wanted a spot in the back, where she'd go unnoticed. She took a deep breath. Mendacino Valley High. Here i come. She was standing right outside her class. She pulled out her cell-phone. To her surprise, she had missed a text. She was so preoccupied with responding, she didn't notice those stunning silver blue eyes watching her.

The bell rang. She got in first. She flew to the desk, and staked out a seat in the farthest corner of the back. Kids were trying to sit with anyone they knew. She didn't care. A fiery redheaded girl sat in the desk on the other side of the back row. She looked at Eradanus and smiled. Eradanus smiled back. "Hey" she said, "I'm Lyyra" "Hi Lyyra, Im Eradanus. But just call me Era" "Your name is very pretty. It's a constellation, right? The river, right? Heavenly water quadrant. Mines a constellation too. Lyyra. The lyre. Hercules Family quadrant." said Lyyra. "You understand the stars too?" Said Era excitedly. "Understand them? There my life!" "Class, please bring your attention to me. Role time."

"Eakdon, M." "Here" "Farnsworth, E." "Here" said Eradanus. She continued on down her list until she got to the last student. "Zaeryx, O." no reply. "Zaeryx, Orion." All of a sudden the door burst open and a lanky boy barged in. "Here" HE looked straight at Eradanus. She gasped. It was him. The silver-eyed boy. "And why, Mister Zaeryx, are you late on the first day of school?" He shrugged. "Go take a seat" She pointed at the seat right next to Eradanus. He looked at her, and winked. She smiled. The rest of the class, she tried not to notice him stealing glances at her.

The bell rang. Kids sailed to the door as if their life depended on getting out of the classroom and into the hall. Era grabbed her things. "So." said Orion. "I'm Orion" She smiled. Like she didn't already know that. "Im Eradanus. Call me Era. Its easier." He smiled. "Era. pretty. So you're a star kid to?" he said " A what kid? Elaborate." replied Era. "A star kid. Named after a constellations? Like Orion, The hunter. lyyra, the lyre. Fornax, the furnace.?" "oh. Who's Fornax?" "A good friend of mine. Him and Lyyra are an item. There like polar opposites. She's got a temper high to heaven and he's mellow as gray. But they always had a thing for each other." "Oh. Lyyra seems cool. We talked a bit during class." "Sit with us at lunch, ok. Just find me or Lyy. You seem cool." he paused "plus, it's the least I can do since I nearly killed you with my 'board today." "Okay. I'll see you later." He watched her walk away. It was her. She was the one. The hunter had found his prey. The river. Or was the river going to drown the hunter? He shrugged, and walked away.

Eradanus had a great day by the time lunch came. She had all her classes with Lyyra, three with Orion, and one with Fornax. She was so used to being miserable and lonely during school, she forgot how much she loved learning new things. Lunch came. She found Lyyra, and they got in line together. Lunch was euphoric. Eradanus laughed. She had almost forgotten how to laugh. She smiled and joked. She sat right next to Orion too. He was very handsome, with shaggy black hair, his stunning eyes and tallness. Era hadn't had a crush in a long time. It felt good. But she also felt slightly childish. The day ended. She was walking home when all of a sudden someone was riding a skateboard beside her. She turned, and there was Orion. She smiled. And was stuck smiling...Time had stopped. He pulled out a vicious looking syringe, smiled, and raised it. "The hunter caught his prey" he said.
