Every story, fanfiction or not, should have a "catch". Something to capture your readers attention. A fisherman doesn't throw out a line without some bait on it, so give the people something to entice them. Why should we care about these characters? Whats going on with them under the surface level? Make your readers read between the lines - don't spoon feed them! Make them work for it a little. A bit of a mental challenge will engage them and keep them coming back for more. Keep them thinking. Keep them guessing. You don't always have to state the obvious. So whether its a huge plot twist, a really shocking story premise, or even a massive surprise ending, always make sure that you have a catch.
