I straightened out my uniform, a plain white and red short sleeved, typical diner waitress dress, and my apron and walked out from the kitchen and into the red and white 60's themed diner.
My name name is Vanessa, I'm seventeen, I have reddish brown hair. I live in a small town in Arkansas. I like to paint, read, take pictures and make people laugh.
"Hey Van wanna take section 3 today?" My Aunt Jillian asks. My grandparents run this diner and a lot of the family work here.
"Sure!" I grab my pad and pen and head over to section 3. The first table has our regulars Steve and his wife Marilyn. They have been together for over 50 years and are good friends with my grandparents.
"Hey guys how are you doing today?"
"Great Vanessa, and you?" Marilyn asks.
"Pretty good thanks! And you Steve?"
"What a more beautiful morning to spend with my beautiful wife and have the great service of a pretty young waitress as yourself! So I would say I'm doing great!"
I laughed. Steve was such a sweetheart. "Will you guys be having the usual this fine morning?" I ask already knowing that they both want; two plain black coffees and a great big slice of Angie's Apple Pie, the diner's specialty pie.
"Yes ma'am thanks!" Steve says as he reaches across the counter to hold his wife's hand.
"Alright I'll get that for you guys right away!" I say with a smile. Those two are the cutest! I scribble down their order and head over to the counter to hand it to Aunt Jillian to bring to the cooks.
I head to the next table and take their order and bring it to Aunt Jillian. I make my way over to the third table when the doorbell rings. I turn to see who it is.
It's a girl kinda stereotypical with long blonde hair and small perfect physique perfect makeup very pretty, you get the point. She looks about twenty-one.
With her is a man, probably her boyfriend. He is tall has dark brown hair and blue eyes. He's got muscles just about everywhere and could make any girl swoon. He looks about 22 or 23. He looks so familiar and reminds me of someone I don't want to think about right now. I turn away and head towards the third table.
"Hi welcome to Angie's Diner! My name is Vanessa, and I'll be your waitress this morning. Is there anything I can get for you right away; drinks? One of our new appetizers?" I look out the window and notice the sun start to disapear under some possible rain clouds.
I take their order after getting their kids some crayons for their kids menus. After that I head to table four.
When I look up from my notepad I wish I was assigned counter service today. The blonde girl and the dark haired boy are seated. I get a sharp pain in my chest but I quickly push it away. I start my chant.
"Hi welcome to Angie's Diner.. My name is- ".
"Vanessa." the guy mumbles. Looking down at his menu. His girlfriend gives him a weird look.
"-Vanessa." I finish. "I'll be your waitress for today. Is there anything I can get for you?" I look at the guy kind of confused. He looks up from his menu.
He looks me right in the eyes. His gorgeous blue eyes search my soul for I don't know what, and I see pain cross his face and eyes. He recognizes me, and my heart aches again. Who is this guy and why is he so familiar?!
At that same moment the sky goes dark, and a flash of lightning followed by thunder roars through the little town and the power in the diner goes out.
I excuse myself to go see if Nan and Gramps need any help. As I speed walk as fast as I can away from that table. I look back and the boy is still staring at me as we make eye contact again, a crack of lighting and thuder echoes through the sky. We both look out the widows confused and when we make eye contact for the third time, and yet again the flash of lighting followed by thunder.
What the hell is going on?
