Chapter 3—Dinner with Danger
Grey showed up right on time.
“Hey, I’m glad you could make it,” I greeted as he walked through the front door.
“I brought dessert; I hope you guys like cheesecake. I didn’t know what to expect,” he told me.
“My dad and I happen to love cheesecake,” I assured him.
“Oh, it’s just you and your dad?”
“Um, yeah,” I whispered. “My mom left us last week, so it’s a touchy subject. Just try not to mention it around my dad.”
“I’ll make sure of that then.”
We walked into the dining room where Dad was placing a few glasses on the table.
“Our guest has arrived,” he said with a huge grin on his face. He approached Grey and I started the introductions.
“Dad, this is Grey Quentin. Grey, this is my dad, Dr. Ray Jensen.”
“Nice to meet you, Dr. Jensen,” Grey said.
My dad held out his hand and replied, “Call me Ray.” Grey smiled and shook his hand.
“Let’s sit down. Serena and I made dinner ourselves.”
“A home-cooked meal; I miss those,” Grey chuckled as he settled into a chair.
“Why is that?” I asked.
“I live in an apartment alone, and I’m not the best cook. It’s been takeout and microwave dinners for a while now.”
“Well, I’m glad that we could provide you with a real meal tonight,” Dad joked. “We’re pretty good at what we do. My daughter mentioned that you were pre-med.”
Grey nodded. “Yes I am. I, ugh, I love to help people.”
“So do I. That’s why I became a doctor,” Dad replied.
I rolled my eyes, knowing the irony of the situation. It was a weird scene, watching Dr. Flame and the guy who was potentially The Raven.
“Here, try this. Chicken is my dad’s specialty,” I said, giving Grey a couple slices.
“It looks great; it’s charred to perfection,” Grey said.
Dad smirked because Grey’s words were exactly what he said earlier.
“So how long have you lived in Wernland?” Dad asked.
“About ten years; I’ve been living alone for five, though.”
I mentally scanned my knowledge of The Raven’s timeline. The Raven started showing up in local news reports just a little over five years ago.
“Do you have family in the area?” Dad asked. “You said you live alone. Where are your parents?”
“Dad, that’s personal,” I warned him.
“Don’t worry about it, Serena. It’s fine. Um, well, Ray, I was raised by my grandparents in Shawn City, but when my grandfather passed away, my grandmother and I moved in with my uncle who lives here in Wernland. Then I moved out of my uncle’s place after my grandmother died in a tragic accident.”
