Chapter 4—Zap Unmasked
I didn't get much sleep the night before. I kept thinking about how happy Grey made me feel, but I also kept reminding myself of the ultimate goal. I had a duty to my father and to myself. We had to destroy The Raven, and that's what last night was. I have to convince Grey that my intentions are sweet and completely harmless, but I can't let myself be sucked into this "relationship." In the end, he shall and will be destroyed.
Ren and Tammy asked me to meet up with them for brunch, and we settled for a light at Truman's and Company, a little café downtown.
"Give us updates, please," Ren requested.
"What's been going on with you lately?" Tammy asked.
"Well, Grey came over for dinner last night," I explained.
"Shut up!" Ren squealed.
"Did your dad interrogate him? Was it weird having him in your house so soon?"
"Actually," I replied, "I thought it went pretty well, and so did my dad."
"So he's in the clear. Is he on your dad's good side? Are you and him officially together now?" Ren asked.
"Yeah, my dad loves him," I claimed. "And, um, I'm not really sure if we're official yet, but I guess we're getting there."
"What did you guys talk about over dinner? How did the night end?"
"Um, we just talked about random stuff, and the night ended with us having dessert and Grey leaving."
"Did he hug you or kiss you on the cheek?" Ren asked.
A small smile emerged onto my face, and for once, I found myself blushing.
Tammy gasped, "He kissed you for real, didn't he?"
I nodded. "Is it that obvious?"
"Of course it is. We've never seen you act this way, all embarrassed and blushing," Ren responded.
I placed my hands on my cheeks. I could feel myself burning up.
"You're finally turning into one of us, except you're fawning over an average guy instead of The Raven."
Technically, I was falling for The Raven, but not in his superhero form but in his regular everyday form.
"Must you guys always bring The Raven into the conversation?"
"Sorry, sorry. It's just a habit."
"You know, you always discuss the hero, but what about the people that make him a hero?"
"The victims?" Ren guessed.
"What do you guys think about Dr. Flame and Zap?" I asked. I always strayed away from these types of questions, but I was suddenly very curious. What do these two really think of our alter-egos?
"Dr. Flame is obviously a pyromaniac. I don't understand how he could possibly find it enjoyable to burn things," Tammy replied.
"And Zap has the electrical powers, which seem pretty cool, but she's under the control of Dr. Flame. She's a sidekick, if...villains have sidekicks."
