- end of note

I leave the peaceful solitude of my bed. Melting by Kali Uchis starts to play from my phone through the Bluetooth speakers. Wow. Seriously?

I walk into the kitchen, swaying to the beat. It reminds me of Cole. Stop. Don't think about him.. Cole who? That's better. I battle with my thoughts. I grab a cucumber and a sharp knife and begin to chop it up on a wooden board. It's about 5:30 in the afternoon. The glass doors leading to the little backyard garden are open wide, the white silk curtains are swaying in the breeze. I feel content and warm. I feel in love. Felt. Loved. The knife slices down on the side of my finger and I yelp in pain. My blood starts to leak rapidly out of the tip of my finger. The clear cucumber juice and blood mix and make a deeper colour. I quickly grab a small white towel and cover it. I open a draw and take out a big bandaid and try to open it with one hand which proves almost impossible. At perfect timing I hear a knock on the large wooden door. Who in the world is that. My heart skips a couple of beats and I start to feel a little light headed. It's either from the blood loss, or because the person outside my door could be Cole. I forget the bandaid and rush over to the door, I quickly check my reflection in the mirror before I turn the knob and reveal an unexpected visitor. Very unexpected.

"Kevin?" I frown. My chest sinks. I hold my once white towel, now blood red, around my hand and embrace him carefully.

"I'm on tour right now, thought I'd come see you." He smiles, "this is Matt-" Kevin moves aside to reveal a young dark haired rusty man who scrapes his foot down on a cigarette. He a strong jaw and ashy brown eyes. He puts his hand out to shake mine. I extend my right hand and shake it. His hands are warm and soft. The tips of his fingers are rough. He's wearing a white sweatshirt and a pair of black corduroy pants. His hair is down and his lips are puffy.

"What happened to your hand?" He asks me pointing at the crime.

"Oh uh- kitchen accident." I throw my arm around like it's nothing. "Come in?" I move aside and Kevin walks in and then Matt. I close the door behind them.

"This is so nice El." Kevin says as he leans against the doors leading to the garden. Matt hovers around the kitchen and notices the unopened bandaid. He rips the wrappers off and walks over to me.

"Here." He smiles at me and holds out the sticky bandaid. I smile back and murmur a thank you while I let him cover the tip of my hand in a huge bandaid. A few drops of blood fall to the floor. He wraps it around exactly three times. It ends up covering my whole finger.

"Can we sit outside?" Kevin asks from the door. I shake the sudden warm feeling from my limbs and walk in his direction.

"Be my guest." I smile as the two walk outside and take a seat on the end of the verandah. I scoop the cucumber onto a plate. I rush to my fridge and take out a 3 litre box of watermelon and mint juice. I walk out with the goods and sit in between them. Matt takes out a cigarette and sits it between his teeth. He turns to me, soft eyed and soft spoken.
