My date with Lilith went better than expected. Even more surprisingly she's my girlfriend now. Yeah I know a girl like her and a guy like me? Unlikely. Majority of the school thought so too, but it's true. I was a bit shocked myself.
On the other hand, Sammie and I have went down hill. Wait, strike that we hit a dead end. We haven't talked in weeks, and she won't even look at me. She comes the last minute to class, and she always has someone waiting for her afterwards. I guess we really weren't meant to be friends. Don't get me wrong I really have tried, but it doesn't work. I saw her today by her locker, alone, so I went up to her and before I could even speak her friend Craig was there in a heart beat.
It was time for Algebra again. I was sitting at my desk talking to Ronnie when the unthinkable happened, Sammie walked up to me and handed me a folded up piece of paper. Before I could ask what it was she had walked away.
"What is it?" Ronnie asked looking at the paper she handed me.
"No clue." I said as I opened it, my stomach in knots as to what could be inside. What was inside shocked me. She wanted to talk to me after class. I looked up at her, while Ronnie read the note over my shoulder. Sammie was writing in her notebook like nothing happened.
"You're going right?" Ronnie asked me when he finished reading it.
"I don't know." I said honestly.
"You should." he told me. I looked over at her again. What was I going to do?
After class I found myself waiting in the East hallway for Sammie.
"You showed up?" she sounded shocked as she was walking towards me.
"Of course I did. Why wouldn't I?" I responded looking at her.
"Because Lilith is your girlfriend." she said her steps slowing.
"What does that have to do with anything?" I asked her walking closer to meet her halfway.
"She doesn't know you're here, does she?" Sammie asked looking me in the eye.
"No, what does it have to do with any of this?" I was confused as to what connection this and Lilith had with one another.
"I should go." she said quickly turning to leave.
"Stay." I told her grabbing her wrist.
"I can't," she said not looking at me. "Lilith can't know this happened."
"Why not? Why is she so important?" I asked as I dropped her arm.
"If she found out this happened she'll make my life a living hell." Sammie said looking around making sure no one was watching.
"Please tell me what's going on." I begged.
"Lilith is my cousin, we don't really get along now a days." she explained finally turning towards me again.
"Lilith is your cousin?" I asked surprised. I never would have guessed it. I don't think I have ever seen them talk.
"Yeah, our moms are sisters. We used to get along when we were younger but not anymore. She can't stand me." she told me playing with the bottom of her shirt.
"That can't be true." I said shaking my head in disbelief. Lilith was one of the nicest people I knew.
"She never tells anyone we're related, and if they find out she either denies it or blows it off. I don't matter to her." she further explained her strained relationship with Lilith to me.
"That doesn't sound like the Lilith I know." I told her still finding this all hard to take in.
"That's because you don't know her. No one knows what she's really like." she said her voice turning almost to a whisper.
"Look, maybe you try to talk to her, she's really sweet." I hesitated to say nothing else really came to mind. What was I supposed to say? 'Sorry you and Lilith hate each other?' I don't think so.
"This was clearly a mistake." Sammie said quickly looking up at me.
"I'm just saying, maybe you guys can work this out. Give her a chance." I replied trying to calm her down.
"I did. I could never turn my back on her. She did this to me." Sammie said with a scoff.
"I can't believe that." I told her shaking my head.
"Of course you can't. She has you wrapped around her finger too. Goodbye Noah." she said and walked away again, but this time I let her.
"Maybe you should listen to her." Marty said eating a french fry. I had just finished telling my friends what happened in the hall.
"What has Lilith done for me not to trust her?" I asked looking at them waiting for a reason.
"I'm not saying you shouldn't. I'm just say that maybe Sammie has a point." Marty rephrased.
"Why would Sammie lie?" Danni asked me stealing one of Marty's fries.
"Maybe because she doesn't like Lilith." I suggested to them.
"Yeah, let it go you guys. Noah is happy that's all that matters right?" Ronnie said jumping to my defense.
"If it's fake happiness then what's the point?" Marty retorted.
"Fake happiness?" I questioned.
"If Sammie is right, then there's a chance she's just using you for something." Danni theorized.
"Why? Because it's so impossible for a girl to like me?" I asked.
"That's not what we're saying. It's just that she has a reputation for being a not so nice girl, and we don't want you to get hurt." Danni told me.
"Can't you guys just let it go? He's happy, and he deserves to be. Let him watch out for himself." Ronnie said to them.
"You're right. I'm sorry." Marty said with a sigh.
"Me too." Danni added on.
"It's okay. Just have a little faith." I told them all.
"Besides what could possibly go wrong?" Ronnie asked looking around.
"Knowing us, everything." Danni said.
So I was in third period when Lilith sat next to me as usual.
"I didn't know you were related to Sammie." I said looking at her wasting no time.
"I thought you didn't talk to her anymore." she retorted quickly turning in her seat to look at me.
"I usually don't, but I did today." I told her.
"Yeah, we're related." she confirmed.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked.
"I don't tell anyone. I mean come on, have you seen her?" she asked with a snort.
"Yeah, she's fine." I said not understanding what she meant.
"She's freaky, it's bad enough our parents make us see each other all the time, but then my mom told her mom to transfer her here when the kids at her school were harassing her." she scoffed at the thought.
"You should give her a chance, she's really nice." I attempted to tell her.
"Not happening. It's bad that you know, I can't have everyone knowing. Who wants to be associated with the school freak?" she asked tossing her hair over her shoulder.
I wasn't sure what to say. I mean I can't really force them to like each other. I can't make Lilith see Sammie as normal. I can't make Sammie see that Lilith can be really sweet. I guess I'm just caught in the middle.
