Waking Up

The sun was just peeking over the Appalachian mountains in West Virginia. Carolton, a small city at the base of said mountains, was still mostly asleep on this Saturday morning. However, one house out on the edge of town had been awake and busy long before the first hint of dawn.

However, Lucy van Helsing, a sort-of permanent guest of the Wright family, was having none of it. She buried herself deep under her covers. For her, it was too early. Her alarm clock started making its offending noises again, and Lucy hit the snooze button, again.

"Lucy!" a middle-aged woman yelled from the floor. "That is the fifth time this morning! I know you move freakishly fast, but either you, Isaac, and Ellie are going to be late to the airport or no breakfast."

"But I packed last night," Lucy groaned sleepily in response. "Doesn't that buy me a few more minutes?"

"No. Isaac, bring her down." The woman commanded.

"Yes, Mom."

Lucy burritoed herself even tighter in her blankets. The heavy footsteps coming up the stairs soon reached her bedroom door.

"Lucy, I'm coming in," Isaac called.

"I don't wanna go to school," Lucy groaned.

Isaac opened the door and entered Lucy's dark bedroom. "I'm carrying you downstairs."

"Don't you dare!"

Lucy's protests were in vain. A few seconds after her last warning, Isaac wrapped his arms around Lucy's midsection and put her over his shoulder.

"Put me down," Lucy whined.

"Nope," Isaac said, popping his lips at the end of the word.

He carried her down the stairs to the kitchen of the medium-sized two story home and put her down next to the table. Lucy adjusted her black comforter so that it covered her head. Isaac leaned against the table where his three younger siblings were already eating. He looked at Lucy who was glaring at her best friend. They were an odd pair. Lucy was someone who would be called emo or goth, and Isaac was more of the high-school quarterback type, but they were friends nonetheless.

"You're the worst," Lucy said.

"I know," Isaac replied.

"Thank you, Isaac," said Isaac's mom, who was standing by the stove.

"You're welcome, Mom."

"Morning, Mrs. Wright," Lucy yawned.

"Morning, Lucy. Breakfast is on the table. Eat quick. Mr. Wright is taking y'all to Yeager in half an hour," Mrs. Wright said.

"Do I have to go?" Lucy asked tiredly.

"Lucy, I may not be your biological mother, God rest her soul," Mrs. Wright replied, "but I am the woman that raised you. I told your momma that I'd take care of you and provide for you, and sending you to that school is part of the deal. It's your last year anyways."

"But who's gonna keep away the undesirables while I'm gone?"

"We defended ourselves from the bloodsuckers before you came along," a new person said. "We can take care of ourselves if you're gone."

"Morning, Duke," Isaac and Lucy said at the same time.

"Strange to see Captain without her eyepatch," Duke commented while casually grabbing an apple from the fruit bowl on the table.

"Shut up," Lucy retorted. "I didn't have time to grab it."

Lucy adjusted her blanket so that it was around her shoulders and grabbed a bowl and spoon from the respective cabinets. She filled the bowl with cereal and milk and started munching.
