Blast! Damn! Double blast!
Day two of my new job, and I had already managed to do something wrong! What was the use in that stupid document anyway! All it had was weird letters and numbers:
LPH - OW
JNM - HL
DJM - HL
LEH - KIA
And the list went on, but I had a weird feeling about the letters KIA. I didn't know what it meant, so I just pushed it to the back of my mind and carried on walking.
After having stumbled across the file, I wasn't concentrating, so I accidentally pressed the 'backspace' button, unfortunately, at the exact moment my boss walked past. It's safe to say that my ears were still ringing a few days after that.
My boss: Blake Denover. One of the most successful, most well known business men in the entire world. He has eyes, ears, fists and the occasional spare limb EVERYWHERE. He owns almost the entirety of my estate, and is currently working on the project of buying the rights to 'happy birthday' from Warner Music Group. He is very scary. And when I say scary, I mean oh-gosh-there-goes-my-lunch! kind of scary.
You know what I need, I thought, I need some Doritos. That's right, something nice and spicy, to take my mind off of things.
So with renewed energy, I waved goodbye to the receptionist of the building, and started on my way towards the nearest co-op.
The only problem about where I lived was that it was in a 'rough' neighborhood, so to speak. Sometimes it would be very dark when I finished work (especially when I used to work nights at the bar down the road), so I would have to ring my best friend Herma to give me a lift home.
The trick to stay safe is to:
1) Never be too distracted
2) Always be aware of your surroundings
3) Have an extra eye everywhere
4) Limit going out alone as much as possible
5) Never take a shortcut
6) Always be aware of your surroundings some more.
An extra rule I should add to my list is to not forget any of the above rules. Unfortunately, I managed to break just about all of those rules that day.
As I walked down the dingy back streets, my only thought was that I needed to get to the shop as quickly as possible, the fastest way there - the back alleys. As I marched over the crevices, potholes and drug needles lining the dingy streets, I thought I saw a flash of movement out of the corner of my eye. I spun around, plunging my hands in to my pocket to grab the pocket knife I put there every day. I looked around, but didn't see anything as I scanned the streets, a small knot forming in my stomach.
Paranoid. I reasoned, as my grip on the knife loosened. I was just scaring myself.
I shook my head and carried on walking. My eyes straying off to the sides every now and again, until a light from above, illuminated my face, and filled my heart with indescribable joy! It was-
- the cooperative!
Anti climax I know, but it made me feel safe. I walked inside, as a warm breeze fanned my cold face. I sighed, taking in the aroma of employees crushed dreams, and children's tears. Wonderful.
I hummed as I strolled down the crisps and snacks aisle, searching for my baby. I heard the automatic doors slide open behind me, and didn't register the dark hoodie, or notice them as they walked past me.
Ah! There they are! I thought, as I beheld a sight most wonderful, most magnificent, most-
Okay, I'm exaggerating again, but it makes it interesting!
I grabbed the pack of hot doritos, trying not to salivate on the questionably clean floor of the co-op.
As I headed to the till, I noticed a dark figure also come to the till. A shiver went down my spine, as I felt two eyes burn holes in to the back of my head.
I gulped as I shakily handed over the money for the crisps, and put them into my bag, putting my appetite on hold until I could get home. I glanced out of the grimy window of the corner shop, cringing as I noticed it had got considerably darker than when I left the office.
I walked out of the shop, not able to shake off the feeling that I was being followed. I heard muffled footsteps a way behind me, and took a sudden turn, backing into a dark alleyway.
I cautiously stepped back, as I saw the dark figure look around, and walk past my hiding spot.
I ducked behind a bin, just to be sure, but my heart stopped when my back came in contact with something warm and hard."Ah! So this is the girl that has been giving boss so much trouble!" A voice sneered from behind me.
