Hey guys I just want to say that this is my first time writing and I'm still not done editing so feel free to pint out any mistakes and I know the chapter is short but it will get longer promise
My daddy told once "It's hard being the new folk, Ruby." But I've never really new what he meant cause ain't nobody new in King Mississippi, rested right next to the river, and enough people to call your neighborhood a family. King ain't had new folk since Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved into the old cracked house next to the creek, but that was even before great aunt Petunia was born. My daddy also said if King ever did see a new face, I should treat them as if I had known 'em my whole life. Though I really didn't get that either, but I kept my mouth shut. The only reason Daddy was talkin my ear off about new folk was that some moved in right next door to us. They moved into Mrs. Rockets old house, she died in her sleep last year, but the old hag had what was coming to her. She was the meanest old lady you've ever met. Cason and Sarah use to tell me she ate little girls eyes, but I ain't never believed 'em. Sarah is my twin sister but she likes to act like she's three years my senior, just like Cason. Cason is my older brother, but he acts like he's my daddy sometimes. Like last year on my tenth birthday he said "You need to grow up Ruby Harper Davis or I'll make you eat the mud next time." I was throwing mud pies at Clifford Roundhouse, he was the neighborhood spoiled rich kid. He said someing that didn't leave a good taste in my mouth. So I chucked my mud pie at him, that shut him up. By the time my daddy finished about how I need to watch what I say around people, I had already gotten my shoes on to see what this these new folks where all about.
"Ruby Harper, did you even hear a word I just said?" My daddy said with a little loudness to his voice. My daddy was a teacher at the only school ever built in King. My daddy was tall with a long face, but could brighten any room with his perfect smile. Great aunt petunia told me once that John-my daddy-could kill the whole world, smile, and bring it back again.
"Yes sir,and I promise I'll be nice" I said as I moved towards the door
"Good. Now go out back, and leave the new neighbors alone."
"Yes sir."
Cason and Sarah where already outside cause I'm the only one who can't hold there tongue, so they didn't get the ear full I did.
"You better keep your mouth shut we ain't making a bad impression, you hear?" Cason said, knowing I had already gotten it from Daddy
"I know, I know. But I can't help it I'm honest."
"You're a little more than just honest Ruby, you're just flat out rude."Sarah explained with a hint of bitterness to her voice.
"Take it back!" I yelled. I started chasing her around the yard
"Will you two stop it already! I'ma trying to see the new neighbors and I can't with y'all yellin and screamin!"Cason said not looking at use but through a little hole in our tall wooden fence
"Daddy said not to bother the neighbors."Sarah said not wanting to get in trouble and I nodded at her
"Well we ain't gonna get in trouble if he don't know. Come here Ruby look at this."Cason said with surprise in his voice.
"But I want to see!" Wined my sister
"You'll get your turn but Ruby's goin first."My sister huffed as I walked over to the fence. I stood on my tippy toes, and saw the weirdest thing I think I'll ever see. A boy around my age with a cast on his left hand and arm and an angry look on his face, he wore a weird jacket and long jeans and a blue necklace. He then turned and looked right at me. I ducked down and took a deep breath. I think King Mississippi just got a lot more interesting.
