Kordell Wright stared blankly at the black and blue tie in his hands. Although it was just a tie, that tie meant a lot to him. That tie was the last thing his uncle ever gave him, and now that he is gone, Kordell promised to wear it every year on his memorial. Today makes year three.

This was going to be a hard day for Kordell, he wasn't ready to face it at all. But here he was, staring at the black and blue tie, tears clouding his eyes.

"I promised I wasn't gonna cry, Unc." He mumbled to himself before wiping his eyes and putting the tie around the collar of his light blue button down. "Ouuuu, look at my baby." Kordell turned around to see his mother standing at his doorway, smiling while clasping her hands together, taking in her twenty year old son.

"You still don't know how to tie that damn tie, come here, let me do it." She said as she reached her arms out to him. Kordell walked towards his mother and allowed her to fix his tie.

"There you go. Now you look sharp, just like Louis." She said with a bright, warm smile. Kordell could tell that she was trying not to cry, thinking about her older brother. "He would be proud of you." She added before giving her only son a huge hug. The room was now filled with melancholy and nostalgia, as they expressed their feelings with body language.

Kordell's 6'1 stature, hovered over his mother's 5'7 stature. Both had the same cocoa brown skin and honey brown almond shaped eyes. He got the rest of his looks from his father, which consisted of a slender round nose and medium pinkish-brown lips. Although he never knew his biological father. Louis took the place of Kordell's father.

"I just, miss him, ya know?" Kordell said as he let go of his mother. "Of course, I do too. But remember, he's with you everyday, don't you forget that." His mother responded. Kordell nodded his head and kissed his mother's forehead. "I'm gonna go warm up the car."...

Kordell and his mother made it to Louis's gravestone in GreenPoint Cemetery. Kordell put back on his suit jacket, since it was a chilly day in Canarsie, Brooklyn NY. He stared at the black granite tombstone with his uncle's full name engraved into it with his picture on the left upper side of the tombstone. The date showed that his uncle was only 42 years old when he died from street violence.

"If you ain't built for the streets, don't be in them." Louis's words popped up in Kordell's thoughts. He listened to those words indefinitely, considering the fact that his uncle was a product of the streets, a statistic, a drug dealer.

The family knew about Louis's hustle, and although Renee, Kordell's mother disagreed with Louis's lifestyle, there was nothing she or the rest of the could do to change his mind. Louis had a lot of respect in the streets, but when you have too much respect, you also have oppositions.

On that day, March 2nd, 2017, he was as they say, "caught lacking". Kordell remembers that day as of it were yesterday, although this was the day he was mostly trying to forget....

March 2nd, 2017

Kordell had just left from basketball practice and was drained, all he wanted was some sleep.  The bright sun was beaming on his face, making him squint his eyes as he walked down the Bedford-Stuyvesant streets. Both his hands were gripping onto the straps of his backpack, giving him a little more back support.

After 15 minutes of walking, he turned onto his block and the first thing he noticed was the sirens. There were about three police vehicles and an ambulance right in-front of his house. Now more anxious than ever, Kordell jogged down to his house and stopped when he seen what had happened.

Renee was on the ground, holding onto her older brother's body, crying out loud. "Lou please wake up. Pleasee." She pleaded as his blood continued to soak her olive green T-Shirt. "Ma'm, we're going to need you to stand up and let us take him." The one of the EMS workers exclaimed.

Kordell's heart began to beat rapidly, all he could see was red. "NOOOOO." Kordell dropped onto his knees, not caring about the concrete scraping them. Renee stood up and ran towards her son, "Baby I'm so sorry." Was all she could get out before Kordell stood up and started screaming at everybody at the scene. No one could control his anger, not even him. He eventually had to be restrained by force. That night he had been booked for assaulting a police officer, but Renee bailed him out a couple of hours later...

Now here he was, standing right in-front of his uncle's tombstone, letting the tears slowly flow out of his eyes...

An hour went by as Kordell and his mother had an in-depth conversation about Louis and how he was when he was alive. They cried together them prayed and was now heading home.

Kordell glanced at his mother as she had her head against the window, sound asleep on the passenger side. It had been a long day, but Kordell's night wasn't over...
