Moving Day

Alia P.O.V.

My alarm went off early, way earlier than it should have been going off on my Saturday off. Groaning, I reached over, hitting my phone to shut it up. I turned over and snuggled back into my quilt, falling back into dreamworld fairly easily.

What felt like seconds later, the blanket was pulled back and the curtains opened, sunlight streaming straight into my face. 'Ugh, switch it off.' I mumbled, covering my head with my pillow.

'Alia, it may have escaped your notice but you can't switch off the sun.' my sister chuckled. I pulled the pillow down to glare at her, making her laugh harder. 'You gotta get up sleepyhead. It's moving day.' That caught my attention; I bolted upright, grabbing my phone and checking the time.

'It's not even nine yet.' I whined.

'I know, but if you want breakfast before ma and papa get here, you need to get out of bed.' she said.

'What time are they getting here?' I asked, pulling myself out of bed.

'Half nine.' she told me, getting another groan. 'Could be worse; they could be getting here at half eight.' She has a point but I didn't admit it, choosing instead to send her a real helpful look as I headed for the bathroom.

I'd barely finished breakfast when my parents showed up. Ma wasted no time, heading straight up the stairs to my bedroom, leaving me and Shaheen to trail along behind while papa headed for the sitting room, telling us packing wasn't exactly his forté. We got to my room to find my mum had already found two suitcases and had them open on the floor. We exchanged a look, both of us aware of how efficient ma was when it came to things like this and neither of us particularly looking forward to the next few hours of being given more instructions than we'd be able to remember.

Sure enough, as soon as she saw us in the room, she began to tell us what to get and where to put it, the directions flying at us faster than we could keep up. Me and Shaheen didn't even have the time to exchange another look before doing as told and getting to work.

After an exhausting four and a half hours, all the stuff I would be taking with me was packed up in two suitcases and three boxes. At some point, my other two siblings had turned up, the four extra hands relieving some of the work from me and Shaheen. Like papa, Sunny wasn't the biggest help in packing - though he did try - but was a big help in when it came to moving the packed boxes downstairs into the car.

By three, all my stuff had been loaded into the cars and we were on our way to Varun's flat.

The whole way there, I couldn't sit still. I was nervous. It was probably without reason - mostly - but I felt so anxious that I thought I might be sick. The fact that I hadn't heard from Varun at all didn't so much to help; knowing him, he'd forgotten completely about the whole thing and wasn't even at home. That thought increased the anxiety to the verge of panic and I was tempted to tell Shaheen to pull over. The only thing that stopped me from doing so was the fear that I may just vomit if I opened my mouth.

It wasn't until we pulled up in the car park of the apartment complex that some of the nerves dissipated. The fact that we'd finally reached was, of course, entirely unhelpful but Varun conveniently chose to call just as I exited the car. 'Alu, where are you yaar? My parents have been here for the past hour and a half and they're making me feel all jumpy.' he whined as soon as I answered. I laughed, his familiar voice calming the raging anxiety.

'We just pulled up.' I told him, practically able to feel his relief through the phone.

'Finally. I'll be down in a minute.'
