Hayden smokes a cigarette sitting cross-legged on the matrimonial bed. Her eyes are blistered by dint of crying. She keeps thinking about their relationship. And why did she get there, shut up against her will in their bedroom. She has always been sympathetic to him. She has endured his lies, his frequent mood changes, and even the fact that he is a serial killer. She feels betrayed to have given so much to him and to receive only mistrust in return, even after those years spent together.
She fell in love and she is still in love. She always believed that she could help him. Help him overcome his lack of maternal affection. Help him live without the fear of being abandoned, help him control himself. But Oliver is an unpredictable man and she comes to the conclusion that no one can change him. The only one that could perhaps calm him down and make him understand that he is going too far is Lily, their daughter. Hayden knows very well that he would do anything for his daughter to see him as a hero.
She crushes her cigarette in the ashtray on the bedside table and she lies down on the side, one arm below the head. She cries, again. She knows she has to put an end to it. She loves him more than anything but she can no longer live like that. He becomes completely paranoid. And she does not want Lily to grow up in such an unhealthy atmosphere. Even if she loves Oliver and she does not want their story to end in these circumstances, she has no choice, she must protect Lily.
As she weeps in tears, she hears Lily talking. She asks if she can come and say goodnight before going to bed. Oliver agrees but asking her not to be too long. Hayden smiles, her daughter does not forget her. At the same time, she has always spent her time with her, much more than Oliver. Hayden hears the door of the bedroom opening and her daughter walking towards her, her teddy bear in her arms.
"Oh Mommy, why are you crying? Is it because you're hurting?" Lily asks her hands on her wet cheeks. "Daddy told me you were sick and you need to rest."
Hayden looks badly at Oliver. He is leaning against the door frame, his arms crossed. His face is inexpressive. He removed the handcuffs just now. He is annoyed because by removing the handcuffs, he tried to get closer to her as if none of this had happened. He wanted to kiss her but she turned her head and she completely ignored him. She also decided to change and no longer yield to his charm even if she has to take a lot on her.
"Don't worry, my heart, I'm fine," Hayden answers, drying her tears. She caresses her daughter's face with a smile. "I'm just a little tired."
She stretches out her arms so that her daughter will give her a hug. Lily snuggles in her arms and Hayden enjoys this moment. She would give everything for Lily. And even if she has to take her away from her father, she is ready to do so.
"Come on Lily," Oliver said. "You should already be in bed."
Lily moves away and looks at her mother with disappointment. Hayden smiled at her, stroking her cheek. She has a heart ache. She sees that Lily is disturbed, she is not used that it is Oliver who takes care of her. The little girl forced herself to smile, her eyes sad. Obviously she did not want to go to bed. She turns her head to her father and then to Hayden.
"Listen to your father, sweeheart," Hayden said calmly. "It's time to go to bed, you have to be fit for school tomorrow."
"But I want to stay with you Mommy, I'm not sleepy,"
"We'll spend more time together tomorrow," Hayden caresses her cheek. She would love to stay with Lily longer but Oliver will not agree. "Go join your father, I love you sweeheart and good night, make beautiful dreams."
"I love you too Mommy," Lily kissed her mother's cheek before walking nonchalantly towards her father. She passes beside him, he places a hand on her little shoulder and he follows her to her room, he closes the door of their bedroom with key to be sure that she does not escape.
