Axel POV

"Axel"

She gasped as I looked up.

That was usually the reaction I got. I never liked being the center of attention. Ever since I was little, all my siblings rose and I just stayed in their shadow, and ever since we transferred to Washington Middle School and I met Fleur, I knew to keep my head down.

She was gorgeous.

Fleur had long, blonde hair that reached her waist and curved around her slim shoulders. She had fair skin and high cheekbones, which accented her full lips. But her eyes, those were the best part. They were bright green and blue, mostly green, and swirled around in a mix of different shades around her pupils.

She was someone I knew I could never have.

She probably preferred someone like my two siblings, Monty and Tyler. They're super popular, unlike me who would way rather stay in the shadows, and way more good looking. That's mostly why I kept my head down all the time. It was like a miracle when I got put in front of her in Algebra, but I was sure that she never noticed me or cared.

When the teacher announced what we were doing, I wasn't what to write about Johnny or Claire, but my mind nearly exploded about compliments I could write about Fleur. After a bit of debating I finally started scribbling down a compliment about her

Fleur- the nicest in the group

It sounded a bit rude to the other two, but I didn't really care about them. Plus, the two lovebirds had each other. And I had Fleur.

No, no I didn't I had to stop thinking that.

I was interrupted from my thoughts when I heard her honey coated voice say quietly

"What's your name?"

Startled, I froze. I had never heard her talk to anyone besides her friends or the teacher. And she couldn't be asking that to them. I peeked at her beautiful face through my hair, which was staring at me expressionless.

She..she was talking to me?

She knew I existed?

I tried to stop thinking stupid and then took a deep breathe, looked around me out of habit, and finally looked up at her, saying my name.

"Axel."

I felt my face heating up as she gasped, and looked back down at my paper, pretending to write.

After a few moments I looked back at her cautiously through my hair again, and felt anxiety building up in my chest when she started writing something. She paused, and then looked back at me, causing me to blush at being caught looking at her and looked back down at my paper.

After a few more minutes the teacher announced we should trade our papers, and I felt all the more nervous. We had to hand each other or papers in a circle, meaning I got Johnny's, Claire got Fleur's, Johnny got Claire's and Fleur got mine. We all each other our papers, and I nearly jumped when I felt I felt our fingers brush, igniting a spark between our hands.

I pretended to read Johnny's as I carefully looked at Fleur's expression as she read mine. At first it was confusion, then her eyebrows shot up to her hairline as she looked at me.

Oh no.

Was it a mistake writing that? Then her face broke into a smile as she started laughing quietly, which is what I realized Claire and Johnny were doing too. I swallowed and looked up again. Claire and Johnny were leaning forward and giggling about something, and Fleur was smiling at me.

"Nicest in the group?"

Uh oh.

"Uh, well, you don't really t-talk much and um, I honestly didn't know what to write." I lied.

That only made her laugh again, that gorgeous sound causing me to smile. Then I immediately looked down. My smile was so ugly.

"Well you shouldn't be the one saying that I don't talk much, Quiet boy"

At this I had to laugh, and she joined along. I don't think I had ever felt happier. The class was over way too fast and soon the bell rung and we were rushing out of the classroom. I looked down again, out of habit, but this time I was grinning stupidly.
