ALWAYS

What happens when hot meets cold? When fire meets ice? When two completely different worlds join to form one? Some questions don't have answers, but some, people just never discover. Almost like a cure to cancer.

People think that cancer makes life miserable and depressing. For me, it is quite the opposite. When I was diagnosed with cancer when I was seventeen, I was shocked. But it was almost like a wake-up call to me. I live optimistically, seeing the good in life and people.

I've never really found interest in boys. I mean sure I've had a couple of boyfriends and I received a lot of attention after I was diagnosed with cancer. But I just don't see what all the other girls my age see in boys.

The sound of the machines surrounding me in this bleak white room broke me from my thoughts. I have stared at this ceiling too many times. I am in this hospital almost everyday. The first year of my cancer wasn't as bad as the second. I was only in the hospital about once every other week.

However, when my second year started, the symptoms became more severe and the hospital visits became more frequent. I still attend highschool as much as possible. I am turning 19 in a month and I will be graduating soon after.

I stand up from my bed and pull open the curtains from the windows, letting in the beautiful morning light. I stand, admiring the incredible California skies when my name is called.

"Amanda, it's time for your medication." I follow the nurse into the room next door.

After I take my medication, I decide to take a walk around the hospital. As I walk around these all too familiar hallways, I begin to hear a distant crying. The noise gets louder as I reach further and further down the hallway.

When I reach room 216, I discover the crying's source. With my curiosity level at an all time high, I crack open the door to see what lies on the other side. However, I can hardly see anything but white, so I open the door almost all the way as quietly as possible.

I find a boy, about my age, with brown hair that sticks up it the front. He is next to a bed that holds a woman, about in her 40's, in a hospital gown with tubes in her nose and machines all around her. The boy has his head in his hands while he kneels next to the bed.

I stand in the doorway taking in this saddening sight when the boys lifts his head up and looks my way. I quickly dart in the direction of my room.

I close the door and jump onto my bed. As I sit and comprehend the events that just occurred, my curiosity gets the best of me once again. I stand up from my bed and go to the room next door.

"Clarice?" I ask my nurse once I see her long white coat.

"What's wrong, honey?"

"Who is the patient in room 216?"

"That is private patient information."

"What happened to her?"

"I can't tell you that either."

"Please?" I ask as nice as possible.

She looks around and pulls me out into the hallway where no one can see or hear us.

"Her name is Mrs. Dallas but I cannot tell you anything else, okay?"

"Okay."

"And you cannot tell anyone I told you this."

"Alright, thank you Clarice."

"You're welcome. Now go get some rest."

I walk to my room but stop myself just before entering the room. I need to find who the boy was and what happened to Mrs. Dallas.

I sneak past Clarice's office and towards the check-in center. When I reach the counter, I grab the sign-in clipboard and look for the last name Dallas.

I scan the list and finally find the last name Dallas.

Cameron. Cameron Dallas. Room 216. I feel my curiosity be fulfilled. Feeling almost satisfied, I head back to my room for the night.
