By the time I get to the tent, the sun has set. Whaddaya know?
"You're late," he tells me as I enter the tent.
"No shit Sherlock," I answer back, still a bit mad about his actions when we first met. Instead of telling me off, he smiles and gestures me to a chair, second on his left.
In the tent, Locradis has managed to fit 5 weak mahogony chairs in a circle around this desk which is piled with all the notebooks and drawings I saw earlier. The first chair on his left is occupied by Rachel, the clumsy girl Destiny and I saw earlier. She waves at me and smiles. The two chairs next to me are occupied by twins, a boy and a girl. They have soft features and are quite unnoticable and frail. The only thing that sticks out from the black hair, brown eyes, and small nose and lips, is the gray, silver streak in their hair. They look at the ground shyly, and fiddle with the pencil and paper in each of their hands. We mutter hello to each other as I sit down, neither of the parties feeling too outgoing.
"Verolina, meet Rachel, Lucy, and Jared." he says, pointing at each of them in turn. "As Verolina so kindly pointed out to me today, we can't send Section 1 to Major in the Left Wing. We have to use Section 2 instead. Section 1 will be used in Building battles." he say, getting right down to business.
I do a doubletake. He listened to me? He's changing his battle plans on my suggestion?
"Take a look. The black lines are the outlines of our former plans. The reds are Verolina's. I looked through her suggestions and decided that she's completely right. We're sending our strenghts into the wrong areas because we don't see each Sections strenghts. Look at the revisions and tell me what you think," he tells the group, passing the map around.
The twins review the map together, ocassionally muttering to each other and nodding. They take a while but eventually, they look up together and nod their approval. Rachel, however, takes one glance at the map and looks right back up to Locradis.
"Locradis, we agreed we'd send Section 3 to the Building battles," she says. I'm taken aback by her force. The sweet, innocent girl I met is gone. She speaks in full force with a confident tone. She sounds sure of her words but a tad bit agressive. And I myself start to wonder a bit, why is it that we're not sending Section 3 to Building battles? She sounds so sure that that's where they belong...
"Um..." Locradis begins. "I think they would do well in minor battles. They only have 17 people and it doesn't seem right to send them to the most violent battles, does it?" he asks, he himself unsure now. "Verolina pointed it out to me and suggested we put them into the minor battles in the Left Wing...." he trails off, looking at Rachel.
"Verolina suggested huh? Well I suggested that we put Section 3 in the Building battles. I suggested it. Remember? Now does Verolina really know more about battle then me? Me, your most loyal follower, your smartest strategist, your best fighter. Me, yours. " she says, edging closer to him, whispering in his ear. And he's spellbound.
"I guess Section 3 can handle the Building battles." he says in a hushed voice, speaking more to Rachel than the group. He looks at her and she looks back. But while his warm, brown eyes sweep helplessy up and down her face, her cold blue ones look back, glazed and unsmiling.
"You guys are dismissed," he says to us. All four of us get up. Locradis remains sitting, gazing at Rachel's lean frame as she makes her way out of the tent. I catch a glimpse of the twin's faces. They mirror each others frown. And their frowns mirror mine. Locradis is being controlled by the innocent girl who speaks so confidently that she persuade a river to flow uphill, and seduces him so softly and smoothly that he forgets about his gray eyed Destiny.
I exit the tent to find Destiny standing there. She greets me and apoligzes for our quarrel, even though that was mainly my fault. She tells me I'm sharing a tent with her for the night. She tells me we have training tomorrow morning at six. She tells me she unpacked for me. She tells me she got me a change of clothes from Base 2.
But I can't bring myself to tell her about Locradis.
Locradis and the blue eyed speaker.
