What Angels Do

We fell into a routine. After school or whenever I was outside, Rai would come play. She said she didn't got to school, but she studied with her parents. She knows crazy stuff about things all over the world. She would tell me about her family and some friends, I would talk to her about my friends at school. We had a silent agreement that we could have as many friends as we like as long as we kept ours secret.

Sometimes we pretended we were undercover with special missions. We reported our days to each other like spies do in movies. It was fun. We became best friends and we told eachother everything.

One day I was laying under the mesquite looking up at her while we ate the brownie Rai's mom made. When I got curious.

       "Rai, what do angels do?"

She thought about it. "We do a lot of things."

      "Like?"

She thought a little more. "We make miracles."

      That's weird. "Those still happen?"

"Yeah. They aren't like rising people from the dead, but we do some everyday. Like yesterday your mom was super sad, so I made sure she found her old pictures in the attic."

"You mean the ones with Aunt Jessica?" I asked. Mom had showed them to me after school explaining that Aunt Jessica was her best friend and she missed her a lot.

"Yup. To your mom, finding them was a miracle. But we also protect people." She continued.

      "Like guardian angels?"

"Yup. Except it's not always the same angel." She got her thinking face again. "We also help people who die."

        "Help?" I was confused.

She nodded again. "You see. When you die, your spirit leaves your body. Angels help guide them to the spirit world where they are safe. And sometimes help angels."

"So do angels ever die?" I was curious. I mean, Aunt Jessica died when I was four.

"No, not really. Some people already dead become angels so they can't die again. We can even materialize for a while to help people."

I finished my last bite. "That makes sense." I thought aloud.

"I gotta go. See ya tomorrow?" She said looking at the setting sun.

"Yup." I answered as I got up. "I'll see you here like always." She smiled and then flew off.
