"I've got three down over here!" Burr called.
"Ha! You're slipping. I've got four," Hamilton smirked walking over and resting his sword on his shoulder. "Guess I'm the better Hunter now."
Burr rolled his eyes. "Look, my decapitations are clean, yours are hack jobs. You got lucky."
"Luck had nothing to do with it."
"Luck had everything to do with it."
"You're just jealous," Hamilton sang, strutting over as Burr cleaned off his blade.
"Hardly," he drawled. "You killing one more vamp than I is nothing to be jealous over. The nest is cleared, we should go."
"I'm not budging. I won, you have to pay up."
"Alexander-"
"Nope."
"This isn't the time."
"Like I said. Not moving."
"You're covered in vampire blood."
"So are you, now pay up. You lost the bet, it's only fair."
"You're insufferable," Burr said, sheathing his blade and walking over.
Hamilton grinned, "Then why do you stick around?"
"Because someone's got to keep your reckless ass alive," Burr said, placing his hand on the small of Hamilton's back and pulling him close.
"You mean I'm keeping your sorry ass alive."
"No. You almost died three times just now."
"I knew you'd cover me," Hamilton said lowly. "But I still won so pay up."
Burr's gaze flicked down to Hamilton's lips before he pulled Hamilton tighter against him and kissed him deeply. Then he pulled away and walked toward the door. "Let's go home. We're both in need of a bath."
Hamilton wriggled his eyebrows. "The same bath?"
"Get in the fucking carriage."

Hamilton remembered it like yesterday. They had promised each other, swore an oath saying that they wouldn't, no matter what. But now that Hamilton was holding Burr's dead body in his hands, it didn't seem like that oath meant the same thing anymore.
It had been his fault. His fault, and he wasn't going to let Burr pay the price. Hamilton had been reckless, he knew better than to leave himself exposed, counting on the fact that Burr would be there to cover him just like always. And that afterward, Burr would scold him for being stupid. Wait for an opening, he'd always say. Hamilton always ignored him and now?
Now Burr was dead.
But it was worse than that. Much worse. Hamilton killed him. Hamilton was the one who killed him. They'd been working a case, just like always. Hunting down another nest of bloodsuckers, when Hamilton got jumped from behind. Burr shoved him out of the way and the vamp got him instead, they dragged him away and by the time Hamilton caught up, Burr had been turned.
He even tried to convince Hamilton to turn as well, to join him in immortality. When Hamilton responded snidely, trying to cover up how much pain he was in, knowing there was no cure, Burr decided to protect his new family instead, trying to get Hamilton to leave.
Hamilton responded by driving dead man's blood directly into Burr's heart. Enough to kill him. And it did.
Now Hamilton was clutching the body to his chest, thinking about the day they promised. "Don't you dare try and sell your soul for me."
"As if. You're not worth it."
"I'm serious, Alexander, in this line of work, you have to promise."
"Fine. As long as you wouldn't do the same for me."
"Deal."
Hamilton gently laid down Burr's body, and walked away, stepping over the other decapitated corpses, and kept going until he came to the crossroads. He bent down and buried the small box and chanted. Waited.
"Well, hello there, darlin'. What does you delicious little soul desire?"
"Let's make a deal."
