Jack's POV
The trek up the mountain seemed endless, I didn't remember it taking this long when I was younger, but I couldn't stop now if I returned without trying I wouldn't be able to forgive myself. I stopped to rest by an old tree that curved up leaving a hollow hole sheltered from the wind and snow. I sat down and rested my back against the thick wood, sighing I leaned my head back and closed my eyes. I sat there for just short of a minute before I heard footsteps approaching the tree. "Hello?" I called softly suddenly feeling on edge. After a second with no reply I started feeling the ground for something I could use to defend myself. My long fingers soon wound themselves around a long stick , picking it up I examined it, twisted wood about as tall as me with a hook like curve on the top. I push myself to my feet ready for whatever was out there. Slow footsteps entered the cave and it took me a minute to process what I say, a small weary women hunched over covered in a black cloak. I raised my sick feeling it grow cold under my fingers, "who are you?" I questioned the cloaked person not letting the fear show in my voice. "Me?" the lady croaked in an old voice brittle form time. I stayed silent waiting for her to answer me. "Oh I'm nobody just an old soul living out the rest of my life in peace" She rambled stepping further into the cave. "The real question is... who are you?" she continued looking up at me, dull blue eyes piercing into me, dark bags under her eyes surrounded by hundreds of wrinkles. Her nose stuck out unnormally long with a large wart perched carefully at the end. "Um.." I start trapped in her gaze "I'm, -I'm Jack Frost" I told her looking away "And what might you be doing up this mountain?" She questioned making me uncomfortable "Nothing, I'm just looking for something." I . told her not wanting to give away anything else. "And what might you be looking for?" she pressed on "Nothing that concerns you" I finished getting annoyed with the constant press of questions. I went to walk away but she blocked my path peering up at me with a crooked toothed smile "Maybe I can help you"
I stopped and stared at her for a moment, not quite trusting this hooded figure " And why would you do that" I prodded not fully understanding why someone would offer to help someone they don't know "I've been up here for a long time, you could use my help" I stood there for a second before slowly nodding my head "Fine, but you better not try anything" She nodded a sly smile falling across her face. I moved past her letting her follow me out and began on my way up the mountain again. She followed my with silent grace and I had to give her credit she was surprisingly nimble for someone of her age. I still had my stick I could use it to move tree branches and lean against it when my legs got sore, it made me feel almost weightless. We walked in an uncomfortable silence for a long time, I wasn't sure what to do or say, I didn't even know her. It soon started to get dark and the cold would only get worse, we needed to find somewhere to stay for the night. I started to look around until my eyes spotted a cave. "So um.. It's getting late, we should um get out of the wind," I started "there's a cave over there, we can spend the night in" I finished pointing my shaft at the small hole in the rock. She nodded and followed me into the opening, the cave wasn't too small, but it wasn't gigantic. "I'll be right back, I'm going to get firewood" The old woman said leaving for a few minutes before returning with her arms full. We soon had a fire going and were getting cozy for the night.
