I'm confused when he leads me through the forest, and up to the campground's office. Sunshine barely touches the cabin as we near it, and steam rises from one of its pipes.
"What are we doing here?" I ask.
Will looks back at me, "I have to see if he's in or not," he adds when I give him a puzzled expression, "The guy who might be able to help you."
"He works here? At the campground?" I question as the two of us mount the creaky stairs of the porch.
"Yeah." Will nods, "His name is Thomas Sangster. You met him?"
My face darkens noticeably, "Oh, yeah, I've met Thomas."
Will chuckles, stopping with his hand on the doorknob, "He's giving you trouble?"
"You could say that."
"Don't worry about him. He's difficult, and it's frustrating, but he has his reasons." He says mysteriously, turning the doorknob, and swinging the door open.
We step into the warm office together (I leave Red, who shoots me an outraged glare, out on the porch), the familiar scent of pine filling our noses. Morning sunlight filters into the office cheerfully from the single window that the room houses. When I walk in, my eyes are met by a pair of pleasing, chocolate brown ones.
Dylan stands up from his chair, where he had been slouched down, looking tired. He greets us with enthusiasm, "Will Poulter and Stephanie Bennet! Good to see you both."
I smile and Will says, "Hey, Dylan. We're looking for Thomas, is he around?"
"He's in the back, on a phone call." Dylan says, raising an eyebrow, "Why are you looking for Thomas? Something going on?"
Will leans on a desk, glancing over at me, "Stephanie?"
I blush, slightly embarrassed to suddenly be put on the spot, "I just need a job. Will is trying to help me find one, and says Thomas might know about any jobs around town."
"Ah," Dylan nods, "he would be the one to go to, I suppose. He's on the city counsel, after all. What kind of job are you looking for?"
"The kind of job that makes money."
Dylan laughs, "So, any job?"
Smirking, I nod, "If it pays, I'll take it. I just need to save up a little more cash, so when I hit the road again, I'll have gas money."
"Hmmm," Dylan nods, and I can see the gears turning in his head, "Well, I actually may have something that would work."
Intrigued, I stare at him, "Really?"
He shrugs, "I don't know if you'd want it or not, but I may as well mention it. I work part time at an ice cream shoppe, as well as here, and I know my boss, Mrs. Allison, is hiring. It's a managers position, so it makes a bit over minimum wage, and Mrs. Allison is a really sweet older lady. If you're interested in the job, I'm sure she'd love to help you. Especially since she only hires adults - she doesn't trust teenagers."
I raise my eyebrows, "That would be awesome, actually. I'll take you up on that offer."
"Great!" Dylan says, "I'll give her your number tonight, when I go in for my shift. And I'll put in a good word for you." He adds the last part with a playful wink.
I smile, "Fantastic. Thanks, Dylan."
"Don't mention it."
I glance at Will with raised eyebrows, "That was easier than I thought it would be."
He grins, "I guess fate is on your side."
Just then, I hear a noise from the back. The closing of a door, and approaching footsteps. Thomas steps into the front room, in all his vile glory. He wears a brown jacket, with a plaid shirt underneath, and his cheeks are slightly red from the cold outside. He glances around the room, his eyes barely skimming over me as he flops into a desk chair, muttering, "Morning."
