Prologue
A scream broke out the moment the man opened the sliding doors.
It was faint, muffled by the thick walls of the testing room. There was the undeniable anguish in the scream though, an anguish that marks the mind as broken.
The man rubbed his forehead and sighed in frustration. He was going to have to report another failed attempt. He knew Mr. Yuhen wouldn't be pleased. He had seen potential in this woman, thought she would have the Mind. Another bust, though. Just like the last ones.
"Heya Prof! Sweet cheeks didn't seem to sustain either. What now?" A young, flame-haired man looked up at the professor expectantly.
The man sighed again, "Bring in the Menders to fix up her mind again. Tell Angelo to stop his illusions," then he added, "And I've told you my name."
The other rolled his head back in laughter and retorted, " But Ron is such a boring name! Prof suits you better." He then pressed a button on his headset and spoke "Yo, Angel! Stop the mind games for a sec, Prof's here!"
In a second the door marked Testing Room slid open and Angelo stepped through. His glass eyes went to glare at the younger man as he barked, "The name's Angelo, you priss! Get it right or I'll start calling you Izzy instead of Izen!"
Izen gasped dramatically, "Angel! You finally got me a pet name! Does this mean you have indirectly declared your love and want to elope with me?"
Angelo lunged at Izen but the Professor beat him to it. He grabbed Izen by the scruff of his neck and dragged him as far as possible from the murderous boy. Angelo raced after them and was about to pummel Izen when the double doors slid open to two Menders. They nodded curtly at the group before entering into the testing room. The screams had long since died down into painful moans. After a few minutes of waiting, the whimpers ceased and the door opened again. This time the Menders were holding a sickly pale woman with limp dark hair and dulled purple eyes.
"Hey Sweety, sorry for Angel's impoliteness. Hope you feel better." Izen went to 'Sweety' and clutched her shoulders dramatically again. She just smirked and croaked, "It's all right. Seeing Angelo planning your demise was so worth it."
The Menders tugged Sweety away and through the doors as Izen whirled around at the looming Angelo. He stumbled back a few steps with widened golden eyes and hands clutching his chest.
"Oh Lord! Angel stop scaring me like that! If you want to be close to moi, just hold my hand and kneel."
Angelo let out a growl before storming off, muttering to the Professor "Sorry about Sweline. Kill Izen for me."
Professor Ron just chuckled as Izen threw a smooch to Angelo's residing figure and yelled, "Love you too!" before turning towards the Professor with a big smile.
"So....can we please try my subject now? I still think she has potential and I just know she's one of us so it's worth a shot, plus the fact that we have really nothing to lose with Mr. Yuhen willing to do anything about this-"
"Alright. Alright! We'll give your subject a shot. If only for the curiosity if she can actually unlock some potential and become one of us more than anything."
Izen shot the Professor a smile and ran off, probably going to find Angelo to tease him some more. The Professor just smiled and sat down to finish writing the report Izen was doing. The truth was he had to rewrite it, like every other report Izen has ever written. Every time Angelo was involved with one of the reports Izen would write a comment on him every other sentence. Izen teased Angelo in his report, drawing fantasies of Angelo suddenly declaring his love for him or starting to dance. He did write the important details in between his fantasies though. So the Professor just picked out what was necessary and quickly jotted everything down.
He sealed it away in the report envelope and went to collect the file on the next subject. While Professor Ron walked down the twisting hallways, he couldn't help but feel guilty to what they've done to Sweline. She had the most potential out of all of them, so it was worth a shot. They knew it would be easy to mend her mind if the experiment failed and she would be good as new, but he felt bad for making her go through that pain. And now the school will have to bond with yet another new student who didn't even seem like a candidate before trying the experiment on her.
Professor Ron went through the door marked Information and walked up to the front desk. Miss Riley was busily typing away with her too long nails and blowing her too long hair out of her face. She barely glanced up to Professor Ron before she rolled away on her chair to grab a thick green file from behind and roll back to hand it to him. Professor Ron nodded a thanks before shuffling out. Miss Riley was as stark and boring as her pale hair and eyes.
Professor Ron passed many hallways to enter the room marked Teacher Lounge. He found a seat in the corner and leafed through the papers.
Name: Amelia Typhun Date of Birth: August 08, 1996 Gender: Female
The first line to her file. The rest was nothing but papers of average A grades with no black marks. The file of an ordinary smart student who'll probably grow up into a CEO of some big company one day. Nothing caught Prof. Ron's eye or showed any indication why Izen would think of her as a candidate. Until he got to the personal section, that is. Her mother had died when Amelia was seven in a freak plane accident involving what scientists of today call one of the strongest and strangest hurricanes of the century. Amelia was meant to go with her mother but at the last minute came down with a nasty fever and had to stay with her father. Her father had died when Amelia had turned thirteen when there had been an unexpected earthquake in California and a bridge collapsed. Even though mostly everyone had survived, his car had been near the edge and was thrown over. Amelia was now the age of seventeen and living with her grandparents, who both have nearly died of heart failure in the years Amelia has lived with them. Her grandfather was now dying of terminal brain cancer.
What a messed up way to start life. He now understood the reason for Izen's interest. Traumatic life experience was also a possibility in unlocking more potential. This turned the tables. Professor Ron scanned for her address and got up to dispatch a group of Potentials to recruit her. A small square slipped out of the file and fluttered to the floor. Professor Ron bent down and picked up what he saw was a picture of Amelia Typhun. He suddenly felt a sense of urgency to get Amelia as soon as possible. It wasn't her thick raven hair or the dimples. It was the metallic orange color of her eyes. It explained Izen's persistence as well. She has already been unlocked. Raw, uncontrolled potential was running through her veins at this very moment.
Her mind could explode at any moment.
