Chapter Five
The inside was even bigger than Amelia imagined. When she looked up, she couldn't even see the ceiling. Everything in the school made her feel small, from the grand staircase that spilt apart to the potted plants looming in every corner. It looked as if everything was made of glass as well, all shiny and fragile looking. Amelia immediately felt like there was a giant Don't Touch sign on the entire building.
"Come on in Amelia! Don't just wait at the door, we have to sign you in before the big tour." Frita was tugging Amelia's arm, forcing her to move from the entrance.
They zig zagged through multiple corners and corridors, Amelia only barely remembering how they got to the Information door. Frita told Garth and Jayleen to stay with Amelia before going inside. While they waited, Amelia finally had the chance to look around. This felt like it was still part of the main building, though the ceiling wasn't that high and the hallway wasn't as extravagant. There was only three other doors, two on each side. Nothing about them was interesting, though Amelia felt drawn to the end of the hallway. Not exactly drawn, no, it was more like dreaded. As she stared down the hall it was as if some force was just around the corner, whispering words of encouragement. Amelia then and there made a vow not to venture into the other side of this hallway. The cold shivers that ran down her spine and the twisted feeling in her stomach was not an emotion she liked feeling.
Frita opened the door wide and gestured them inside. They all shuffled in, Amelia feeling the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end when she faced away from the hallway.
"See, I told you I didn't make her up, Miss Riley! Amelia Typhun, reporting for duty."
Frita pushed Amelia in front of her to face Miss Riley. She was behind her desk, busily typing away after sparing a glance towards Amelia. She had thin blonde hair with light brown eyes, her entire frame practically blending into her surroundings. She seemed like someone that is easily forgotten or overlooked, like a chameleon.
Amelia stretched her hand across Miss Riley's desk, "It is a pleasure to meet you, Miss Riley," then she put on a friendly smile.
Miss Riley paused in her clicking, glaring into Amelia's eyes for a second before silently shaking her hand. She had a surprisingly strong grip, which made Amelia immediately like her. Her grandfather, Mr. Anthony, always told her to judge someone's personality on their hand grip. She now realized what he meant, staring into Miss Riley's defiant eyes. Her usual smile widened slightly, pleased for some reason.
"Nice to meet you, Ms.Typhun."
With that, she went back to clicking away, clearly suggesting they were dismissed. Frita gave one last wave before pushing everyone out and quickly shutting the door. They didn't stop moving until they were back at the foyer, in which Frita finally allowed them to pause for a breather. She took long steps backwards from Amelia and spread her arms wide, indicating towards the different entrances.
"Well, Amelia. Where would you like to begin?"
Amelia looked around. She looked towards the stairs, the different hallways, the doors leading to the wings. For a moment, she mulled it over in her head.
Finally she decided, "I would like to see the cafeteria, if I may. And get something to eat while we're there, train food is not as good as I thought it would be."
Garth chuckled and stepped forward, seemingly taking charge. He started towards one of the hallways next to the left wing entrance, waving his hand for the others to follow.
"I can show the way for that."
Frita quickly pushed her way forward, marching purposely in front of Garth. He silently turned around and rolled his eyes. It didn't take long for them to get to the cafeteria, in fact all they did was take a couple right turns.
