"I need your help"
"Austin?" What was he doing calling me at this hour? "What's wrong?"
"Elle sent me out to get ice cream but I don't know which to get." I could just picture him in front of a fridge starring at the choice.
I groaned. "So you had to wake me up to ask? Couldn't you have just called Elle?"
"No, she said 'surprise me'." Him doing an impression of her was admittedly funny. "But I wanna get it right."
"Lord, okay, well she likes the peanut butter flavour. And get red grapes too. She likes them together."
"That's... interesting."
"That's Elle for you."
"True! Thanks, Lia, you're a life saver!"
"Yea yea, night."
"Good night." He chuckled, finding my annoyance funny.
When he hung up my head dropped straight back down on the pillow and sighed. What a melon. Austin, I mean. He sounded so urgent I thought it'd be actually important. Still, it was incredibly sweet for Elle though.
I turned over, shoving one arm under and the other over the pillow, also hiking my right leg up. Utter perfection. The perfect sleep position, if you ask me. The temperature in my room was slightly chilly but under the duvet I was toasty warm. That's another must if I'm going to have a decent night's sleep. All these requirements, but it works. I could already feel myself drifting deeper and deeper.
At least, I was until a fucking earthquake shook the entire bed. First mistake; left my phone lying on the spot next to my head. Second mistake; didn't turn the damn thing off.
"Peanut butter and grapes, it's not that hard," I grumbled down the phone as soon as I picked it up, meaning to hang up straight away.
"That's weird." It wasn't Austin. "What're were you dreaming about...?"
Nope, definitely not Austin. I only knew one psycho who'd wake me up by phoning in the middle of the night. What an idiot.
"Nothing since you just woke me up! What do you want?" Why was my sleep continually getting interrupted by this man?
"I need help." That must've been hard for him to ask for.
"I'll say," I thought to myself but didn't say out loud. "And? Why are you calling me?"
"I'm outside."
"What? Harry!" I bolted upright up, feeling very awake now. When I moved the curtain and looked outside, I could indeed see the hulking black shape of his car. "No! You're not coming in."
"I've already been in, Lia."
"That was one time and I promise you will not be happening again anytime soon! Please just leave."
"I don't know what else to do."
"So you show up outside my house? Of all fucking places Harry!"
"Amalia, please." The tone of his voice made me pause for thought before I replied.
"What's wrong?" I spoke softly, not sure if I want to know the answer.
