"We're talking about going up against the whole council," Mike said, feeling a little unsure with our plan.

"You're afraid of them?" I said, my mouth quirking up into a grin. "I didn't think you were the type."

"If we lose," Mike addressed me through gritted teeth. "They'll slaughter us."

"I don't plan to lose," I said indignantly. "I'm not sure about you though."

"Listen Vic," Mike snapped. "Not all of us have the luxury of doing whatever the hell we want. Some of us have to answer to the council."

"He's right, Vic," Hayley said slowly. "You've been out of contact with the council for a while. Are you sure that you are still capable of beating them?"

I rolled my eyes. "How do you think I've managed to avoid them? They haven't been able to breach my wards in like 80 years."

Hayley looked at me for a moment and then nodded. She opened her mouth to speak again but was interrupted by Mike's quick words.

"And how do you know that they're even interested in finding you?" Mike scoffed. "Maybe they haven't breached your wards because they haven't even bothered to try."

"Mike," I spoke carefully, enunciating the syllables of his name. "I have done - and continue to do - my fair share of illegal shit. Considering they bust your ass on a daily basis for minor things-"

"Enough," Hayley sighed. "It's not a competition between us. We're fighting against them and once that is over, you two can duel till your hearts are content."

I shot Mike a glance but didn't say anything else, respecting Hayley's authority. The last thing I wanted to do was piss off one of the strongest wizards I knew.

Although I could perform all sorts of magic, Hayley even with her limitations would prove to be a hard and intense battle. She was much older than I was and had had centuries in which to perfect her type of magic.

She used magic that fed off of your own. The more you used, the more she was able to basically steal from you. It would be the equivalent of draining the life out of you and unless you were smart in the way you fought - she could suck all the magic out of you entirely.

And if you had exceeded the normal age that the mortals live, you'd literally crumble to dust beneath her feet, since there'd be no magic holding your bones together.

I shook the thought from my head when she started speaking again, trying to forget all the stories I'd heard.

"It won't be something that happens overnight," she explained, "they'll do it over the course of a few weeks."

"And is this a thing where we just hold out for as long as we can," Mike began, "or do we hit them back?"

"Obviously we're ending this as soon as possible," Hayley replied. "It's why I've enlisted the two of you."

"Will we be enough?" Mike asked, glancing at me. "Not that we're not strong enough, just that we might be overpowered."

Hayley nodded, "I considered the fact that they'll have a hundred people at least, backing them up against us. I've looked for people who have... diverse talents, such as the two of you."

"Did you find anybody?" I asked, curiosity eating away at me. Despite reclining completely from the wizarding world, I'd be lying if I said it didn't still absolutely fascinate me.

Plus, if I met somebody who could do something I wouldn't ever have been able to dream of - it wasn't too long till I figured out how to do it too. They were my inspiration almost, like discovering you were good at something you wouldn't ever have thought to try.
