I creaked open the office door, peering inside. My mom was typing away on her laptop, the room crowded with boxes still.
I walked in, sitting on a box. She glanced over at me, leaning back in her chair and taking her reading glasses off.
"What're you working on?" I asked, not very eager to explain myself.
"The website. Updating the location and business hours, the usual." She replied, not sounding the most impressed.
I let out a sigh, trying to look as guilty and sad as possible. "Mom, I'm really sorry." I started, looking at her with puppy dog eyes.
"Easter, I don't mean to be the bad cop here, but you had me really worried. I mean, you came home yesterday and then disappeared? We just moved here, we don't know the people and I thought you'd gotten lost or mugged or something. You can't do that to me, I'm getting old, y'know?" Her face softened slightly and I could tell she really wasn't all that mad.
"Yeah, I get it, mom. I promise you it won't happen again, and even if it does, you have permission to send out a search party within five hours of my disappearance," She let out a stifled laugh, shaking her head. "I'm really sorry though. But you should be happy to hear I made new friends already."
"Please do tell." She smiled, more than happy to move away from the conversation.
"Well, I met a group of girls and we hung out all night. They're all super nice, we played card games and ate junk food and it was honestly really great." I smiled a little nervously. It wasn't all lies, I was just leaving out the parts about werewolves and satanic rituals.
"Sounds nice, I'd love to meet them all. Are they normal people?"
I looked down for a moment, biting my lip. "Uh, mom, what's really so bad about being friends with other supernatural?"
She shook her head, catching on that they obviously weren't normal people. "Oh, Easter, always looking to make trouble.. I was scared this would happen. What are they?"
"They're all witches. And, we hung out with some werewolves, too."
"Well, the thing with witches is that you really have to be careful. Most of them are very conniving and two faced to people they don't know. Now, I don't want to sound like I'm just assuming the worst about these people, but supernatural and teenagers usually don't mix well," She glanced down for a moment, letting out a sigh. "And judging by that bandage on your hand, you've already gone against my next point. Young witches like to experiment with magic, as anyone naturally would. The thing with that is sometimes it doesn't go as planned. Some rituals or spells can kill you if you aren't strong enough to carry them out," She placed a hand on my shoulder, holding her gaze with mine. "All I want is for you to be careful. I'm happy that you have friends, but watch your back. You never know who could be plotting against you, especially in a coven."
I raised an eyebrow when she mentioned the coven. Damn, she read me like a book.
"Thanks mom, I promise to be careful and if I ever suspect anything or have any issues, I'll come to you right away." I smiled, getting up and leaving the room, letting out a breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding in.
--
I walked down the hall to my room.
It was a bit of a mess, there was still a few boxes that needed to be emptied, so I thought I might as well start.
I dug through one large cardboard box, examining each little trinket that I pulled out.
One was a trophy for winning a music competition when I was eleven. Along with it I pulled out a bunch of participation ribbons from track and field. I would enjoy burning those later.
